High impact data management

In recent years, information and data storage has increasingly become an area that assumes increasing complexity. Data analysis, its volume and constant growth make it necessary for institutions to be at the forefront in terms of research and work in the area.

“In the era of knowledge, the need to deal with large volumes of data has become a constant, preventing conventional methods for processing from being adequate for its management, thus emerging the name 'Big Data' for this new context of knowledge. . This is how adding value to said data through the combination of statistical analysis, computational methods and information visualization has emerged as a science, 'Data Science'," said the ULS Vice-Rector for Research and Postgraduate Studies.

Finally, the Vice Chancellor extended the invitation to the university community related to the area to participate in this meeting of "collaboration on a high-impact topic such as Data Science and Big Data."

conf ecuador

The conferences were held between November 27 and 29 at the Faculty of Educational, Human and Technological Sciences of the National University of Chimborazo (UNACH) in Ecuador.

“Contemporary Education, Educational Quality and Good Living” was the central axis of the V International Congress held in Riobamba (Ecuador), a space for scientific debate that brought together academics and researchers from different countries to reflect on the training of teachers worldwide. .

“The purpose of the event is to generate a space for exchange between students, teachers, managers and other educational and organizational agents, who investigate and actively participate in the generation of more human spaces for life, from the fields of education and pedagogy, educational direction, management and policies, among other thematic axes at the various levels and areas of in-person and virtual training,” said Dr. Ángela Urguizo, professor at UNACH and president of the Congress Organizing Committee.

The event included different activities, such as keynote lectures given by researchers from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Mexico; national and local presentations; and workshops with teachers and students, both from the university and from invited institutions.

In this context, Dr. Rodrigo Ruay, researcher at the Integrated Management of Pedagogies Unit (UGIP) and member of the ULS Multidisciplinary Institute, participated with the master conference “Challenges of curricular innovation in teacher training”, in the framework of the celebration of the 50 years of the Faculty of Education of the UNACH.

In the conference, Dr. Ruay emphasized the relevance of curricular renewal for the training of XNUMXst century school teachers, making reference to the processes of improving the curricula of pedagogy careers in Chilean universities and in particular of the University of La Serena, as a regional public institution.

“I had to share the challenges that as the University of La Serena we have addressed in the renewal of the curricula of the eleven pedagogy programs. The contribution I brought on how to look at teacher training for the XNUMXst century school today was highly valued, where we have a teacher who must - on the one hand - know how to investigate, reflect on his own practice and also be knowledgeable about the contexts sociocultural aspects of where their school is located,” explained Dr. Ruay.

Likewise, the professional participated as a criminal expert in a round table, together with academics from Colombia and Ecuador with the theme "Evaluation, learning and understanding."

On the other hand, Professor Elvis Campos presented the applied pedagogical research project “Use of a virtual platform for autonomous learning in the subject of English: a case study”, which focuses on the YouTube platform as a tool for autonomous learning in students. OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF THE RECTORY N°12

La Serena, December 04, 2019.

Dear ULS Community:

Continuing with the policy of keeping you informed in relation to aspects associated with the contingency and institutional work, I would like to point out the following:

1. As the University of La Serena we continue to support social demands aimed at achieving greater social equity in our country and protection of human rights. In this sense, I appreciate the interest of our community in participating in the different activities that have been organized in recent weeks and that reflect a committed university community that wants to contribute to the construction of a more just and supportive country for all (as ).

It is in this same spirit that total respect for student strikes and limited work activities must be understood, tending to generate constructive and valuable three-state approaches, which reflect the hallmark of our institution.

In this same context, I would like to highlight the work of the lawyer Mrs. Elizabeth Escobar Toro and her team, to whom I have requested continue with support in the face of possible violations of Human Rights to members of the ULS community.

2. At the level of the demands of officials and academics, it is important that they know that the Triestamental Commission of the Academic Council -made up of the Association of AF Academics, the Association of AF Officials and the Student Federation- is working on the construction of a first approximation of the 2020 Budget.

This authority, like the university community, hopes and trusts that the 2020 budget includes all the requirements, both union and academic, in a realistic manner, as has been done in previous years, when the Triestamental Commission has presented an initial proposal of the Budget to be analyzed by the Academic Council, and then submitted to the approval of the Board of Directors.

3. Having officially received by the CUECH the CONFECH Proposal for the Closing of the Second Semester 2019, which should be discussed by said body on December 07 in Valparaíso, we share some contents of it, which mainly raises the following:

  • Given the situation, the students point out that neither the rectories, nor the teachers, nor the workers, nor the student federations, through their representatives, can ensure the physical and mental integrity of the members of their university communities and that, because they are of an atypical situation out of control of civil society, this prevents a normal closing of the second semester, which generates negative consequences for the houses of study and the groups that comprise them.
  • Likewise, they point out that, considering the implications that attending the different departments of the universities would have for everyone to comply with an academic calendar that has inevitably been interrupted, today the complete will of all levels is required to find a solution and a way out that does not prevent the completion of studies, proposing an action plan for the end of the semester.
  • Confech adds that university students must define semester closing strategies that ensure their permanence, especially for those families who do not have the resources or opportunities to sustain their studies. They propose solutions that must be discussed in student plenary sessions at the national level. The syntheses of these discussions will be collected on Saturday, December 7 in the city of Valparaíso, in the national CONFECH plenary session, in order to decide, together, the best path that the students believe is the one we should follow.

Highlighted the above, I attach the CONFECH DISCUSSION DOCUMENT dated November 28, 2019 for your information.

Finally, comment that, in an upcoming session of the Expanded Academic Affairs Committee - which considers Deans, Directors, Associations of Academics and AF Officials and also the Student Federation - these issues will be addressed based on what is proposed. the student body.

Due to the above and appealing to the prevailing situation, support, understanding and a sense of solidarity are required from each of the levels of our house of studies, to jointly face a possible closing of the semester, considering the multiple factors that They must be kept in mind when making decisions as important as this one.

He greets you with attention,

Dr. Nibaldo Aviles Pizarro
