Boys and girls will be able to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon safely.

Enjoy the eclipse safely. That is the motto of the University of La Serena, which as an educational partner of the community has shared knowledge about the total solar eclipse, highlighting preventive measures for vision care during its observation, in addition to the massive and free delivery of lenses certificates.

garden glasses255 thousand have been the glasses that the ULS has delivered to the regional community, many of which were distributed to hundreds of schoolchildren from various establishments, as is the case of the kindergartens belonging to the school.

The Rector of the University himself, Nibaldo Avilés, was in charge of delivering the certified glasses to the educator and director of the ULS Kindergarten, Pamela Villanueva, so that boys and girls can enjoy this phenomenon safely, always under the supervision of their parents or relatives so that they use protection appropriately.

“With this distribution of lenses we seek to ensure that our community has adequate protection to appreciate and enjoy the solar eclipse. Along with this, we have developed various activities to share knowledge with citizens, educating about this important phenomenon and providing advice to safely view the eclipse," said the highest university authority during the day in which he shared with the preschoolers and educators of the ULS Garden, establishment that welcomes sons and daughters of officials of the institution and individuals.

The boys and girls of the “Los Papayitos” Garden, dependent on the General Directorate of Student Affairs and intended for children of students, also received their certified glasses to observe the solar eclipse on July 2, in a playful and fun activity.

On the day, the educators together with students in practice from the Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education career presented an entertaining and educational play about the astronomical event. In addition, the astronomer of the house of studies, Rodolfo Angeloni, was in charge of talking to the children, showing didactically with a sun projector how the eclipse will occur and the care they should take when observing it.

This activity allowed us to experience the benefits of functional training.

With an outdoor physical activity, the Kinesiology major at the University of La Serena and Vive Full Deportes recently commemorated No Tobacco Month.

kine2This activity, led by ULS graduate, kinesiologist Javiera Castro Slomp, allowed us to experience the benefits of functional training. “It is a great satisfaction for me to be able to contribute to future generations, as a graduate I know how important early experiences are in different areas and today I was able to be part of it, I am grateful for the opportunity,” said the professional.

The day was held within the framework of the graduation profile of the degree and the development of the subject of Sports Kinesiology, which is coordinated by Lic. in Physical Activity Sciences, Jorge Carrizo Largo. “We were able to count on all the students of the subject, who expressed agreement and curiosity to investigate other areas related to movement as a therapeutic factor,” he said.

The participants thanked everyone who made this collaboration possible, mainly Sebastián Cortés Toro, director of the Vive Full Deporte center, and the management of the Race Director, Dr. Alfredo Gary Bufadel.

older adults1

Those present appreciated the gesture of the university and the presence of the first university authority.

More than 70 older adults from La Serena, representing different groups, received from the Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, the President of the Board of Directors of the ULS, Ernesto Velasco, and the mayor of the commune, Roberto Jacob, glasses to enjoy the solar eclipse on July 2.

older adults2These glasses are added to the thousands that the school has delivered, in a collaborative work alliance with the municipality of La Serena and that reaffirms its role as a scientific-educational partner of the world capital of the solar eclipse, also contributing to protection visual of the people who will observe it from different places in the territory.

At the meeting, which was marked by good disposition and joy, the older adults thanked the management of the first university authority, also highlighting the constant collaboration that the University has and the open-door policy regarding the delivery of knowledge to the people who need it, and not just the regular students of the school.

The mayor of Serena reinforced the idea of being partners with the University, and requested that the university continue on the path of direct communication with the thousands of inhabitants of La Serena.

The President of the Communal Union of Older Adults, Yun Lin Moy, thanked Rector Avilés for the gesture since “in this way many older adults will have the opportunity to enjoy the eclipse, since some definitely cannot because they do not have the means; “It is very good that they take into account groups of older adults in these important events.”

Another member of the group, Sonia Rivera, said that “for us this type of gesture is very exciting, that they take the trouble to visit us, we want to make young people understand that respect for grandparents, for older adults, is important, and for the highest authority of the University to come, is to realize that we have recognition,” he assured.

eclipse

The objective is to be able to record the effects of the astronomical phenomenon on atmospheric and ionospheric dynamics.

Throughout the month of June, the Space and Earth Observatory: SEO-ULS of the Space Physics Group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Faculty of Sciences, has been preparing for the solar eclipse on July 2, whose center will be the Coquimbo Region. This makes it relevant to have several detectors to record the effects of the eclipse on atmospheric and ionospheric dynamics from the thermal, geoelectrical, geomagnetic, ionic and electronic composition, as well as its wave dynamics point of view.

Among the works that were carried out, the preparation of the VLF antenna was developed to study the behavior of the D layer of the ionosphere, the preparation of the Cherenkov detector to study the effect of the eclipse on cosmic rays and the development of the workshop in the context of the collaborative project “Interuniversity Research Center for the Upper Atmosphere”, at the Juan Soldado Scientific Pole, an instance in which researchers and students from the Department of Geophysics of the University of Concepción, the Department of Electronics of the University participated Chillán Adventist and the Space Physics Group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of La Serena.

From the Space Physics Group, they indicated that these works will be very important for astronomical research. “From the point of view of Space Physics, taking measurements during a total or partial eclipse is essential to advance the understanding of the electrodynamics of the Sun-Earth interaction when it is subjected to perturbations of short duration,” they expressed.

All of these works aim to position the University's work in the field of research as a national benchmark in the development of scientific research in space sciences.

nurse training1

The activity was carried out within the framework of the prompt implementation of the Acute Geriatric Unit in the main health facility of the regional capital.

As the beginning of the implementation of the elderly care protocol, which will grant preferential treatment to those over 60 years of age in the Serenense healthcare facility, the training carried out by the nurse was cataloged. Mg. Carmen Retamal, academic from the Nursing Department of the University of La Serena, which was aimed at personnel from the La Serena health service.

nurse training2“This new approach to care is centered on the elderly person seen as a subject of rights and not as an object of care. The care system is changing, since we have to evolve to one that is born from the needs of the person, and for that it is essential to know the other," said the academic from the house of studies regarding the implementation of the new care unit.

For his part, the director of the regional hospital, Edgardo González, maintained that "older people have multiple pathologies, they must consume more than 5 medications daily, they suffer loss of functionality, among other factors that condition their dependence on care, therefore that the attention to them must be specialized and differentiated, this is an act of justice and a right, since they contributed a lifetime of work to the country.”

Completing this training will allow hospital officials to be better prepared to care for older people, providing a service focused on communication and empathy with their patients, which is considered vital in the care of older adults.

The La Serena health service thanked the academic for her contribution, highlighting the contribution that her work will mean in providing better hospital care to elderly people, an age group that exceeds 3% of the country's population. .
