Through this project of the Institutional Development Fund (FDI) - Student Entrepreneurship Line, a group of students seeks to culturally and artistically value a high-traffic pedestrian path inside the ULS.

Various reflections and thoughts made by different personalities are captured in a series of plaques printed on concrete specially designed for high traffic, in what was called “Senda Viva”, a path of art and culture that revalues ​​the meaning of a pedestrian path. university. The project, inaugurated within the framework of the XXXVII anniversary of the University of La Serena, was born from a group of students and seeks to contribute, in an artistic way, to the preservation and dissemination of human thought.

living path2The opening ceremony, which was attended by institutional authorities, led by the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, the Vice-Rector for Economic and Administrative Affairs, Eng. Waldo Valencia, directors of different units and students participating in the project, was the right moment to deliver a message of culture and explain how this idea was created, which captures excerpts from famous phrases on a route where students usually travel.

The student of the Pedagogy degree in Biology and Natural Sciences, Melissa Bermúdez, explained that one of the essential ideas of this path is “to contribute, in an artistic way, to the preservation and dissemination of human thought that induces the user of the road to stop walking, read and reflect on the meaning of that phrase. With this, it is hoped that people will no longer see this pedestrian path as mere pieces of gray concrete, but rather feel that they are walking on the pages of a great book that permeates the force of human rationing, that is, that they are walking on a 'Living Path'. ´”.

living path3During the speeches, and prior to the traditional ribbon cutting, Eng. Waldo Valencia, thanked the way in which this project was carried out, highlighting that at the University life is not only made in the classrooms but also in other university spaces, and even more so if they are with a meaning that contributes to culture. It is for the same reason that given the contribution of 9 million pesos made by the Ministry of Education to the project, the institution decided to grant funds that totaled around 14 million pesos, showing that the university also chooses to support initiatives that feed the student culture.

It should be noted that 35 phrases or extracts from them were selected, identifying Chilean and foreign personalities in the area of ​​knowledge, with emphasis on highlighting those areas represented in the academic units that make up the University of La Serena. The Path begins at the front of the Irma Salas Central Library and ends at the Andrés Bello Campus, passing through the tunnel that connects the Ignacio Domeyko and Isabel Bongard campuses.

The Graduate Monitoring Office carried out this workshop on March 26 through coordination with the tenth level students.

The ULS Graduate Monitoring Office, through its Graduate Strengthening area, began its cycle of workshops aimed at the Labor Insertion of students with a graduation profile. In this sense, the students of the Design program who are in the tenth level were able to participate in a playful and dynamic activity, in which they worked on the requirements and demands of the specific work environment, as well as the effective approach to instances of recruitment and selection of companies or organizations in general.

During the event, student Marcelo Gómez highlighted the activity, pointing out that “as a Design graduate, it is very positive to have the perspectives that exist in the labor market, and to be given a look and information about what lies ahead. ”. Opinion shared by Alberto Márquez, who said that going from being university students to graduates is “a big change and it is important that the University makes these instances, because it gives us the opportunity to glimpse what is coming to us, so I think it is very important for us and, at the same time, gratifying.”

Enrique Molina Garmendia Campus now has a new covered terrace for its students

The inauguration of these facilities is part of the institution's commitment to providing comprehensive support to students during their stay, contributing to their human and professional training.

In a ceremony led by the Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, accompanied by the Vice-Rector for Economic and Administrative Affairs, Eng. Waldo Valencia, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, authorities and directors of different units, the inauguration of the covered terrace of the Casino located on the Enrique Molina Garmendia Campus took place, whose structure will house the students of the courses taught at said campus.

emg2 terraceThis work, which was carried out thanks to joint work between the General Directorate of Student Affairs, the Casino and Cafeterias Unit, the FACSE and the Directorate of Services, allowed the offices to be modernized and remodeled, also implementing them with new furniture.

The Director of Student Affairs, Mg. Miguel Zuleta highlighted the importance that the current administration has given to aspects such as institutional infrastructure, thanking the efforts made in the renovations and asking students to “take care of their environment and protect the new facilities.”

emg3 terraceDuring the opening ceremony, where the traditional ribbon cutting took place, the coordinator of the Casino and Cafeterias Unit, Edgardo Díaz, thanked the Rector of the university for his management and the possibility of making these changes “that go of the students, as well as the recognition of the people who work daily providing a service that lives up to the quality and responsibility they deserve.”

The ceremony, which was enlivened by the music and dances of the Tuna Femenina Azahares, ended with a tour of the new facilities.

The diplomas are generated in the context of the execution of PM ULS 1402.

The Academic Vice-Rector's Office and the Teaching Directorate, through the Teaching Improvement Unit (UMD), officially began the work of the diplomas in Teaching in Higher Education and Curriculum Management in Higher Education, whose launch is part of the assurance processes and quality management of undergraduate teaching in accordance with the guidelines of the Educational Model of the state university.

education diplomas2The programs seek to strengthen skills in the field of teaching in the academics/teachers responsible for the training processes, which will allow the development of quality educational processes and deep learning that place the undergraduate student as the center of the training task; and develop the skills in the field of curricular management of the managers responsible for ensuring the quality of undergraduate training processes, as well as any academic who is interested in enhancing these skills.

The Head of the UMD, Dr. Pamela Labra, stated that the competencies of the graduation profile of the Diploma in Teaching in Higher Education, “are associated with the knowledge proposed by the Educational Model that a person should possess, who does not have a training initial pedagogical, performs or is going to perform teaching at the University.” While regarding the profile of the Diploma in Curriculum Management, he pointed out that it not only focuses on delivering knowledge as content of the institutional, national and international framework "but also on strengthening the social competencies that are so important when leading work teams, resolution of situations with students, but also collaborative work for decision making.”

The diploma courses will last for six months on a fortnightly basis and on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

University authorities, headed by the Rector, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, as well as directors, academics and students participated in the launching ceremony, which was held in commemoration of the thirty-seventh institutional anniversary.

On the occasion, those present were able to tour the facilities of the renovated classrooms, which have ample capacity to accommodate a large number of students, and which with the renovations took on a modern appearance, with a high range of natural and artificial lighting, ventilation adequate, appropriate furniture and security.

In the instance, it was pointed out that they had never been put under repair before and that the process to which they were subjected was an effort by various units, including UMD, Services Directorate and support from the Rector's Office.

"When we talk about quality in the University, we must understand that physical spaces are also an analyzable factor, therefore, we cannot refer exclusively to the teacher's task, content, training organization, but also to educational spaces, classrooms, library, transit places, recreational spaces, etc. Specifically, the University is dedicated to training the professionals of tomorrow, but it also reinforces values ​​and habits. With this I mean that with the didactic use of physical spaces, we also contribute to the comprehensive development of professionals so that they become citizens of the future," emphasized the Mg. Laura Vega.

Finally, and before the attentive gaze of all those present, the traditional ribbon cutting took place that inaugurated the renovation of the classrooms, and then gave way to the tour of the facilities.

The improvement project meant a complete repair of the Design workshops located on the second floor of the Ex-Escuela Normal (Isabel Bongard Campus), spaces that showed damage caused by the 2015 earthquake and the deterioration of previous years, in addition of the rooms and workshops located on the first floor of this building, including the wood workshop.

In this regard, the Director of the School of Design, Mg. Carla Pía López, thanked the authority for these advances, emphasizing that “to these works, we must add the technological implementation carried out a few months ago, a state-of-the-art equipment that undoubtedly contributes to the training of future professionals and the strengthening of the Design school".

3 designIn his speech, the Rector expressed that “this work is a clear example of the quality assurance policy implemented by this administration, which has made an effort to renew the spaces, infrastructure and equipment of the institution, always thinking about the needs of all of us who are part of the University of La Serena. These are, without a doubt, actions that denote the sustained growth of the institution and the progress achieved in recent years.”

The improvement works meant improvement of floors, roofing, ceiling, repair of walls, partitions, electrical network, lighting, implementation of blackboards, painting, equipment, among others.
