The book of essays, published by Ril Editores, will have a first launch at the Santiago International Book Fair and, soon, one also in La Serena. The study text is now available to the community.

“Algebra” and “Links, Divergences and Relationships. Essays on science, technology and society”, are the new books linked to the Department of Mathematics of the University of La Serena published this month. The first, with the authorship of Mg. Raúl Castillo Sierra; and the second, edited by the journalist Dr. Pedro Reyes García, with the participation among the authors of Dr. Marco Corgini Videla.

In the case of “Algebra”, this is the fifth work prepared by Professor Raúl Castillo, who has developed in recent years a series of study texts for different subjects, which are available free of charge to the entire community.

This new book has 155 pages, in which the student will find the following content: Induction, Progressions and Polynomials. As he himself detailed, it is a “text of solved Algebra problems for Engineering students. It is necessary for the student to know the theory beforehand, since it will not be discussed in this book.”

In this way, “Algebra” joins its previous publications: “Calculus I” and “Topics of Applied Mathematics for Engineering and Physics” (I, II and III), all available free of charge to download from the Department of Mathematics website. : www.dmatuls.cl, in the Academic Books banner.

Science Technology and Society

On the other hand, the work presented by Dr. Pedro Reyes, director of the USACH School of Journalism, through Ril Editores, brings together 12 essays by national and international authors, which make up the 374-page book.

As the sociologist Pablo Kreimer, Doctor in Science, Technology and Society (CTS), pointed out in the prologue, “the texts that make up this work range from the study of seismology or genes to environmental controversies; from the analysis of mathematics to the study of virtual communities and the development of information and communication technologies; from sustainable development to the analysis of blogs as a new form of communication. The author raises new and old topics, and approaches them from a kaleidoscope of perspectives that enrich our knowledge. (…) In this sense, they provide a fresh and renewing look at the field of STS studies.”

One of these texts is, precisely, “Prima Scientia”, prepared by the Director of the Department of Mathematics of the ULS, Dr. Marco Corgini Videla, who highlights in it not only the historical development of mathematics, but also the way in which Today this crosses practically all the knowledge we have about the world, whether as a social product or as a tool that emerged from the biology of the human being itself, in a journey through the following sections: The Beginnings; The Pause; The Rebirth; The Copernican Revolution; Mechanism and the Mathematical Universe; Behind the Fundamentals of Mathematics; Geometry is Physics; Abstraction, Idealization and Reality. Beyond Platonism; Temporal Tension; The Biological Imprint and Social Construction. In this sense, the academic expresses that “mathematics itself has become independent of its initial roots. The degrees of generality and abstraction of his achievements have exceeded all expectations and the creative process that underlies it is not much different from what we call 'art' today.

“Links, Divergences and Relationships. Essays on science, technology and society” will have a first launch on October 31, at 16:45 p.m., at the Santiago International Book Fair (FILSA); Then, it will be presented at the USACH and also at the University of La Serena, on dates to be defined soon.
