In the Pentagon Hall of the Andrés Bello Campus, the 2013 Public Account of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of La Serena was held, on which occasion the dean of the macro-unit, Dr. Gustavo Labbé, informed the attendees about the progress made by the Faculty, the pending issues and the challenges.
In the presence of university authorities, headed by the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, executives, directors of School and Department, academics, researchers and administrators of the institution, Dr. Labbé provided details of the indicators of academic performance, such as the number of students attended (students minutes) by the departments of the Faculty (6.896 students) and the number of students attended by the departments to all the careers of the University (16.099 students), figures that the dean compared to years previous, indicating the decrease of these indicators, as well as those referring to retention in the first two years and of graduates v / s enrollment. In this regard, he said that "there are several challenges that lie ahead (...) we must see how these issues can be addressed as a Faculty to improve them."
In addition, during his presentation he highlighted the accreditation results achieved by the careers of Pedagogy in Biology and Natural Sciences and Pedagogy in Mathematics and Computation, programs that increased his accreditation from 4 to 5 years; the participation of academics in Directories or as Experts and in relevant activities; the academic 16 that had a hierarchy change; and the 62 activities related to the environment and extension promoted by the different departments, including talks, seminars, conferences of different kinds, courses, training, exhibitions, Olympics, meeting of graduates, colloquiums, among others.
In terms of research, the dean of the Faculty of Science said that there are 76 projects in execution in the different departments (FONDECYT Regular and Initiation, Postdoctoral CONICYT, FONDECYT and others, Advanced Human Capital Insertion, DIULS, Research Rings and projects with different sources of financing). In turn, he informed that the number of ISI publications was 50, highlighting that the incorporation of new researchers is necessary for this figure to continue to increase. In addition, he indicated that academics of this macrounity participated in 65 scientific events (national 27 and international 38).
Regarding the budget report, he detailed the resources allocated to the departments through the Academic Activities Support Fund ($ 16.929.088) and the Free Disposal Fund ($ 6.943.670), to which the contributions of the Faculty of Sciences are added to different initiatives, among them, the Concursable Fund Faculty of Sciences ($ 98.017.331) and the contribution to career activities, through transfer to the DGAE ($ 1.246.000).
It should be noted that during this public account, Dr. Gustavo Labbé acknowledged the work of the academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty, thanking the delivery and professionalism of all those who work in the macro-unit (paraprofessionals, technical specialists, administrative, academic and researchers).
