The current Rector of the ULS achieved a wide advantage after obtaining 465 votes, while Dr. Marco Corgini reached 359 votes.

The Electoral Board of the University of La Serena proceeded this Thursday, September 27, to qualify the validity of the votes cast in the elections held this Wednesday, ratifying the result that declared the current Rector of the house of higher education the winner. , Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, who obtained 56,43% of the votes, surpassing the candidate, Dr. Marco Corgini, Director of the Department of Mathematics, who reached 43,57%.

Dr. Avilés obtained 465 votes in favor, while Dr. Corgini obtained 359 votes. The white votes were 2 and the null votes were 7.

“First of all, I would like to thank you for the support that has been given to me and point out that today we have had a clear example of participation and democracy, which makes us proud as an institution,” said Dr. Nibaldo Avilés after knowing the results, adding that now “it is up to focus on the development of the institution and work even harder as a community in the new challenges imposed on us by the new laws, and what we have proposed as specific tasks. This means facing institutional accreditation, preparing new statutes and reclassification, among other committed tasks.”

The election of the Rector for the period 2018-2022, which took place this Wednesday, September 26, from 08:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m., in the Pentagon Room of the state institution, was highlighted by the president of the ULS Electoral Board, Mirtha Meléndez, who expressed her satisfaction with the excellent behavior, participation and “the way in which the academics attended, and also of all the administrative staff who worked in the process.”   

It should be remembered that the election of the Rector of the state campus took place this Wednesday, September 26, after the ULS Board of Directors agreed to declare void the final count of the election that took place on August 29 and the result that was derived from this, deciding to take the process back to the stage of preparing the electoral roll and holding the election again.
