Improving the community's knowledge regarding parasites transmissible between humans and pets and the risks of having unattended pets is the main objective of an educational exhibition that will be open to the public from November 13 to 15 at the Andrés Bello Campus in the University of La Serena (El Pino Hill).

As explained by the academic and researcher of the ULS Department of Biology, Dr. Jorge Cepeda, “the current interest of people in pets and their subsequent abandonment is creating a growing public health problem in the La Serena-Coquimbo conurbation. . Dogs abandoned in poor conditions are tending to increase in public spaces. Regarding the transmission of parasites between humans and pets, there is apparently a lack of knowledge. With this activity we address the problem from an educational and cultural point of view.”

For this purpose, the Pedagogy courses in Biology and Natural Sciences, Nursing and Journalism have been brought together, with the complementary help of professionals from the Coquimbo Ministry of Health and the sponsorship and auspices of the Directorate of Liaison with the Environment and Extension (DIVEULS).

It is considered to expose parasitological material, illustrative panels, explanations, reports, interviews, videos and talks by teachers, researchers, specialized professionals and students of the organizing courses.

The activity is free and aimed at schoolchildren, high school students, university students, teachers and the general public. It will remain open from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. and from 15:00 p.m. to 18:00 p.m.
