FIULS Ambassadors Program invites a series of technical talks by graduates for students

ambassadors program

The next presentation will be held on Friday, November 23 and will be given by civil engineer Alejandro Muñoz Fontt, who is working at the Central Office of the Lima Metro, Peru.

The ULS Faculty of Engineering (FIULS) has proposed implementing linkage strategies with graduates and graduates as a mechanism that can serve for institutional improvement and to face the challenge of linking the world of work and the world of education.

In May 2017, two groups of academics who are developing a Corfo program called “New Engineering for 2030, focused on regions” carried out two international missions where they visited recognized universities in the US and Europe, in the which good practices were identified in relation to the university's link with companies and with graduates. The conclusions of this benchmarking, validated by the international entity Laspau affiliated with Harvard University, showed that the most successful strategies are those that integrate the entire university community. This means that a graduate strategy must generate products and activities that are useful throughout the student life cycle. Additionally, it was identified that the existence of networks of collaborating companies and having a culture of graduates allows feedback, obtaining financing funds and connections.

ambassadors2 programIn relation to the benefits that these strategies entail, it can be mentioned that for the Faculty of Engineering, the link with graduates and companies will allow us to know the acceptance, performance and evolution of graduates in the labor market and compare it with the performance of graduates from other universities. institutions, as well as identifying areas of strength and opportunity, generating indicators to evaluate the relevance of the study plans or the performance of the teaching staff and carrying out better strategic planning. And something very important: the strengthening of the image and tradition of the Faculty.

In the case of graduates and graduates, this link will allow them to have access to educational resources that allow them to stay updated, as well as have a network of teachers and professionals who can serve as support in their personal and professional development. Direct support in institutional procedures, information on scholarships and exchange of professionals, job offers and creation of nodes throughout Chile and abroad for the positioning of professionals.

In the case of students, this link will allow them to have more and better information for decision-making, since by generating spaces for interaction between students and graduates, students can have greater knowledge of the requirements of the labor market. and complement their training with professional practices, internships and degree reports.

For employers and graduates (potential employers), the benefit lies in the easy access to students and recent graduates, in addition, they can influence the redesign of educational programs to make them more relevant to their needs, which translates into lower costs. recruitment.

ambassadors3 programAnd in general, for society, the university-industry link will allow FIULS to develop and generate better educational programs, offering better qualified graduated professionals, better connected to job opportunities and with the potential to make greater contributions to their environment.

In this sense, the main objective of the FIULS Ambassadors Program is to strengthen collaborative relationships of the Faculty with networks of graduates and graduates at a regional, national and international level to promote improvements in the quality and relevance of the training processes of undergraduate programs. and postgraduate studies, promote joint and multidisciplinary R&D initiatives, enhance technology transfer capabilities and identify the technological-social development needs and capabilities of the Coquimbo Region.

The first activity developed under this Program is the cycle of technical talks given by outstanding graduates, for FIULS students. The beginning of the series of talks took place on November 14, with the participation of industrial civil engineer Rafael Quezada Gaete, who also has MPhil postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The ING. Quezada, through the talk called “Triple impact ventures and circular economy”, gave an introduction to the concepts of triple impact and circular economy, with examples of different initiatives around the world. In addition, he spoke about his work experience and the ups and downs of life after university, providing recommendations on how to connect effectively to be successful in the job search and to define the goals of a dynamic entrepreneurship at the Latin American level.

The second talk, which took place on Friday, November 16, was given by Javier Lira Ahumada, with the topic "Topography and monitoring of slopes: a history of R&D." The ING. Lira studied Civil Mining Engineering between 2005 and 2011 at the ULS and currently works as a civil mining engineer - geomechanical at EGM Geología y Minería LTDA., for Compañía Minera TECK Carmen de Andacollo.
