The inmates of the La Serena Penitentiary Complex will be able to see the solar event of the year 2019 safely and in an orderly manner, in the strategic spaces designated by the venue.

Reaffirming the commitment of the University of La Serena as an educational partner in the Coquimbo Region, the Rector of the university, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, and the President of the Board of Directors, Ernesto Velasco, presented certified glasses to Colonel Pedro Sanhueza, so that they can be distributed to the prison community of inmates.penitentiary glasses2

The central idea in the delivery of these glasses is that the inmates of the prison can see the eclipse safely, transforming this astronomical event into a peaceful episode for the more than 1.500 inmates who are in that place.

"We appreciate this gesture for our inmates, we want them, despite their condition, to be able to live the experience of the eclipse, and thanks to these glasses they will be able to do so safely," said the warden, Colonel Pedro Sanhueza.

For his part, Rector Nibaldo Avilés expressed that "we wanted to be a contribution to the community, and people who are deprived of liberty are also part of our region. For this reason, we wanted to come forward to deliver these glasses, so that the prison population can safely observe the eclipse. We are an educational partner that shares knowledge with citizens, and that is what we are doing today."
