At the SIGMMA Seminar they will address mining, hydrological and environmental issues.

Water and the quality of the water resource have taken special emphasis in the Coquimbo Region. In this context, the University of La Serena, through the Mining Engineering Department and the Water Resources Center for Agriculture and Mining, CRHIAM, will develop this Friday, January 17, the Research Seminar in Geology, Mining, Metallurgy and Environment, SIGMMA.

International researchers will present on “Monitoring and characterization of the transport of heavy metals in surface hydrological systems” in the Brillador Room of the Department of Mining Engineering of the ULS (Ignacio Domeyko Campus).

Ricardo Oyarzún Lucero, academic from the Mining Engineering Department, stated that the objective is “to present the work we are developing and learn about international experiences in these areas. We have generated research in monitoring water quality and sediments, but in modeling, that is, trying to estimate how a pollutant is transported in the river, we aim to continue in the line of work that we presented in the Fondecyt Project in 2007. ”.

Doctors Robert Runkel, Research Hydrologist and Philip Verplanck, United States Geological Survey, both researchers at the United States Geological Survey, USA; and Patrick Byrne, Senior Lecturer in Geography, Liverpool John Moores University, UK, will present at this conference, organized within the framework of the Fondecyt Project 1180153 “Environmental monitoring and assessment of heavy metal transport and fate in mining affected mountain streams of North-Central Chile : a comprehensive approach integrating hydraulic, hydrologic, geochemical, and modeling issues”, developed by the University of La Serena and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

The activity, which also has the collaboration of the ATMC of the University of Chile, will take place this Friday, January 17, at 10:45 hrs. For more information: royalzun@userena, 51 2 204503 - 51 2 204281.
