ICEC Project begins Cycle of Talks + Science for teachers of the school system

Talk 2 Science RRSS 1

The event is organized by the Scientific Inquiry Project for Science Education (ICEC) of the Coquimbo Region, and will include six activities that will be carried out online.

Various topics are addressed in the Talks + Science Cycle, with the purpose of contributing to teaching work from the perspective of science and teaching. Furthermore, given the context of the health crisis, the space seeks to constitute a moment of reflection, dialogue and connection between the different actors participating in the school system.

“We want it to be a series of talks that makes us understand how we begin to address the importance of science in this context and that we understand that collaboration is the main force that will unite us and that can generate very good changes, especially at the classroom level in any of the modalities that we are developing,” explained Professor Loreto Mora, member of the ICEC team.

The first session was held in the month of June, and dealt with scientific research on proteins and the disciplinary and didactic contributions to the school curriculum. The talk was led by biochemist Boris Arancibia (U. de Chile), who delved into the concepts of proteins, the spontaneous formation of knots and macromolecular congestion.

“The importance of this study lies in the fact that knots are structures that would prevent the correct folding of most proteins and therefore cause failures in cellular functioning, that is, the organism, lacking this function, can present pathologies or even reach the point of death. In addition, the research would determine how new cellular factors, such as macromolecular congestion, affect protein folding and suggest the mechanisms of action by which it is affected," the professional explained.

Regarding space, he stated that “the initiative tries to bring scientific research closer to school teaching, and that is super important, because it is thought that scientists are far from the world and that is not the case. We are also part of teaching and both areas have to coexist and try to integrate knowledge,” she emphasized.

The second talk of the cycle will take place next Friday, July 3 at 16:30 p.m., and will have as its main topic “The consolidation of the professional teaching career: scientific research based on the growth of lettuce in kindergartens” by the nursery educator Macarena Fernández.
