Faculty of Humanities invites to the II Meeting “Advances in research in cognition and language: Cognition and immigration”

Students, academics and the community will be able to join this reflection initiative that will take place on Friday, November 27, from 15 p.m., via Zoom.

Global estimates indicate that, between 2010 and 2015, 0,5% of the world's people - approximately 37 million - left their native country to settle in another territory. In the case of our country, according to the information provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), there are 1.492.52 habitual resident foreigners, coming from Venezuela (30,5%), Peru (15,8%), Haiti (12,5%), Colombia (10,8%) and Bolivia (8,0%).

The socioeconomic inequalities that affect the region have caused one of the greatest social crises in its contemporary history, which has been further exacerbated by the pandemic derived from SARS, COVID-19, and increased significant immigration - in several cases - illegal.

The Second Meeting “Advances in Research in Cognition and Language: Cognition and Immigration” is an instance of discussion of recent findings and knowledge, a product of research work that involves the relationship between cognition, language and migratory processes.

This space aims to approach the cognitive-linguistic complexities of the immigration process, through the linguistic and cognitive characterization of the argumentative competence associated with this human ecology.

With the participation of a panel of experts who will share their studies. Lucía Castillo, PhD in Psycholinguistics, will present “Linguistic alignment and its role in the language-culture interface”; and Francisco Donoso, PhD in Social Sciences, will address the topic “Immigrants, receiving society and acculturative strategies: Contributions of cross-cultural psychology.

They are joined by Rocío Flax, PhD in Letters, with “Contributions of (Critical) Discourse Analysis to Migration Studies”; Cristián Santibáñez, PhD in Linguistics, who will refer to “Background for the study of argumentation in dialogues with immigrants”, and José Gascón, PhD in Philosophy, who will address the topic “Arguing with the other: the role of trust ”.
