ULS will host important scientific mathematics events

August congresses

The XI Latin American Congress of Statistical Societies (CLATSE 2014) and XLI National Statistics Conference, together with the “Eighth Meeting of Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations”, will take place in La Serena.

Important scientific events in areas of mathematics will take place in the months of October 2014 and January 2015 at the University of La Serena, which have financing from the contest implemented by the Academic Vice-Rector's Office and the Research Directorate of this house of higher education to holding international conferences.

These are the XI Latin American Congress of Statistical Societies (CLATSE 2014) and XLI National Statistics Conference and the “Eighth Meeting of Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations” (La Serena Numérica II), which will be led by academics from the Department of ULS Mathematics, Drs. Carlos Navarrete Rojas and Héctor Torres Apablaza, respectively.

Dr. Navarrete explains that CLATSE has been carried out since 1991, every two or three years, as a way to contribute to the integration of Ibero-American Statistical Societies and Associations. It is prepared jointly by the Chilean Statistical Society (SOCHE), the Argentine Statistical Society (SAE) and the Uruguayan Statistical Society (SUA).

“On this occasion, CLATSE 2014 is organized by the University of La Serena, with the collaboration of academics from twelve universities in Chile, with the mission of enhancing knowledge and dissemination of Statistics as a contribution to regional and national progress, strengthening the ties of cooperation for the joint development of scientific research not only in Statistics, but also in the wide spectrum of scientific disciplines that apply it and contribute to its improvement," added the academic about this event that will be held simultaneously with the XLI Conference. National Statistics.

Among the invited speakers are: Dr. María José García (Faculty of Mathematics, MIDE-UC Measurement Center, PUC, Chile), Dr. Bent Jorgensen (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark), Dr. Adelchi Azzalini (Dipartimento di Scienze Statistiche, Università di Padova, Italy), Dr. Alejandra Martínez (Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Dr. Marta Quaglino (School of Statistics, Faculty of Economic Sciences and Statistics, U. Nacional de Rosario, Argentina) and Dr. Juan José Goyeneche (Institute of Statistics, Faculty of Economic Sciences, U. de La República, Uruguay).

Likewise, CLATSE 2014, which will take place between October 20 and 23, will include the invited sessions Bayesian Statistics, Biostatistics, Seismomatics and Statistical Risk Modeling; as well as the mini-courses “Regression Models for Censored Data with Applications in R”, “Topics of Statistics and Data Mining in Big Data” and “Genetic Statistics: tools and models for the analysis of high-dimensional genetic information”. Other background information can be obtained on the website http://clatse.cl.

In the case of La Serena Numérica II, this is the eighth in a series of events that has been taking place since 2005, with the first 3 versions in the Department of Mathematics of the U. Técnica Federico Santa María, which gave origin to Valparaíso Numeric I, II and III; Subsequently, 2 versions were carried out at the Faculty of Mathematics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, constituting Santiago Numerico I and II; Finally, the last 2 versions were developed at the University of La Serena (2011, La Serena Numeric I) and the University of Valparaíso (2013, Valparaíso Numeric IV).

“These meetings, initially conceived as local/national activities, have acquired relevance and international character with the increasing presence of various foreign exhibitors. The exhibition structure consists of 6 invited conferences of 45 minutes each, by prominent foreign specialists, and around 30 contributions of 30 minutes each by researchers and students developing their undergraduate and graduate theses, all of them distributed serially over 3 days, with sessions during the mornings and afternoons,” says Dr. Héctor Torres.

Among this year's guest speakers are: Dr. Johnny Guzman (Brown University, USA), Dr. Norbert Heuer, (PUC, Chile), Dr. Pep Mulet (U. de Valencia, Spain), Dr. Ricardo Ruiz-Baier (University of Lausanne, Switzerland), Dr. Kai Schneider (Université d'Aix-Marseille, France) and Dr. Martin Vohralik (INRIA Paris-Rocquencourt, France).

The Numerical Serena II will take place from January 14 to 16, 2015 and is sponsored by the ANANUM project (Research Ring in Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations), Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering (U. de Concepción), Center for Mathematical Modeling (U. de Chile), Conicyt and University of La Serena.
