Centro Mistralian commemorates the 78th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize

At the event, a 10-piece mural was inaugurated, created and donated by a group of women from Las Compañías. 

In a significant ceremony, the Mistralian Center, belonging to the ULS Academic Vice-Rector's Office, commemorated the 78th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize -awarded on December 10, 1945-, as a way of highlighting this international recognition and the poet's legacy. in society in general.

The following participated in the commemoration: Dr. Desirée López de Maturana, head of the Mistralian Center; the Mg. Carlos Varas, Director of Liaison with the Environment and Extension; Pablo Portilla, in charge of the Camino a Gabriela Mistral Heritage Route; Aldo Valenzuela, in charge of the House of Culture, Las Compañías; Mg. Marcos Elizondo, professional from the ULS Education Department; teachers from Territorio Coquimbo, academics from the Department of Education, women from the Las Compañías group of entrepreneurs, as well as residents of the sector.

To begin the ceremony, Pablo Portilla, in charge of the Camino Patrimonial Route to Gabriela Mistral, gave a story of the moment in which Gabriela Mistral received this recognition and made those present part of this historic moment. Subsequently, the person in charge of the Mistralian Center, Desirée López de Maturana, referred to the origin of this activity:  “every year we try to commemorate that important moment for her, for Chile and for all of us who consider her and always have this in our lives. to his legacy, a legacy that has so many edges, that includes women, children, mothers, educators, teachers, farmers; We all always have something left and not only from her poetry, but also through her letters.”

As part of the Mistralian Center's programming, activities related to Gabriela Mistral and her legacy are frequently carried out. This is how the Mistralian Tertulias are developed, a series of meetings where you can reflect on a work by the poet, recite her poetry or share an analysis from her personal perspective. In this framework, the idea of ​​creating a mural about a verse by Gabriela Mistral was born, which is made up of 10 pieces: each one is an individual painting worked to form the complete work dedicated to the poet.

In this regard, Desirée López de Maturana highlighted that “this mural, which was born from a decision by them, from Gabriela's verses that emerged in those Tertulias. Remembering the date is actually remembering it by making flesh of its legacy, of recognizing women who are often marginalized from the city itself, they are more in the surrounding areas, but where there are great values ​​and it is part of what we wanted to highlight that day."

This activity featured the artistic participation of members of the La Serena Music Academy: Yonshei Carvajal Tejado, Carolina Godoy and Juan Guillermo Acuña, in addition to a community cocktail.

The Mistralian Center is located at Gabriela Mistral 133, in Las Compañías, where research activities and dissemination of the poet's legacy are carried out. In that space is located the House of Gabriela Mistral, where she lived from 1904 to 1907 while working as a teacher.
