The activities were organized by the General Area of Coordination of Rights and Duties for Comprehensive Training (AGDDFI), the Department of Equity and Gender and the General Directorate of Student Affairs (DGAE).

“Living with respect and equity” is called the inaugural activity of a series of initiatives that the University of La Serena programmed to commemorate International Women's Day. Each of them has a multidisciplinary approach designed to reach the wide variety of members of the university community.

In this way, the Institution, reinforcing its commitment to gender equality and the recognition of the fundamental role of women in the community and society, prepared this programming that invites debate and reflection, which will take place between March and April on the different university campuses.

The inaugural activity will be held on March 7 and will be attended by the Seremi of Gender Equality, María Fernanda Glaser, who will give a talk “Ministry of Women in a new 8m: a regional perspective.” The event will take place in the amphitheater of the University of Isabel Bongard Campus.

In addition, the University of La Serena scheduled talks, discussion panels, video forums and artistic activities that will address topics such as gender equality, female empowerment, and leadership in various fields. These activities are designed to involve students, academics, officials and members of the community in general in order to raise awareness and reflect.

For the person in charge of the Gender Equality Area, Dr. Desirée López de Maturana, the importance of this activity lies in the fact that “it is a profound instance that invites us to reflect and recognize the historical fight that women have given for equal rights. . Our University joins the thousands of events and commemorations for Women's Day, various moments will be held such as conversations, fairs and workshops, to move forward, contributing to public discussion and reflection as an educational and political action on matters of equity and gender equality,” he pointed out.

On the other hand, Dr. Rosana Godoy, a member of the same unit, stressed that it is “essential to reflect on the progress made in terms of gender equality, but also on the pending challenges. This date is a perfect occasion to remember the voice of women today, the sustained struggle to open spaces in the different areas of society. It is necessary to create spaces for dialogue, reflection and criticism to advance the much we still have to do, reducing the gaps that are still visible.”

Likewise, he added "it is essential to reflect on the progress made in terms of gender equality, but also on the pending challenges. This date is a time to remember what began in Europe and the United States in the 20th century and everything that has been advanced until today without forgetting how much we still have to advance and the gaps we must overcome.”

As a higher education institution, the ULS seeks to promote the study and good practices in matters of equality and gender, as well as promote the mainstreaming of this approach in the different units, projects and programs that contribute to a more fair, free and inclusive society.
