Master in Latin American Studies co-sponsors the XIV International Symposium on Social Communication

Dr. Cristián Noemí, academic at the University of La Serena, will be in charge of the course: "Inference tasks and discursive robustness."

Together with the University of Twente, Netherlands; the University of the Basque Country, Spain; The Semantic Technology Institute (STI), University of Innsbruck, Austria; the Center for Lexicography, Aarhus University, Denmark; the University of Würzburg, Germany; the Center Tesnière, Université de Franche-Comté, France; and the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN); The Master in Latin American Studies from the University of La Serena co-sponsors the XIV International Symposium on Social Communication which, on the occasion of celebrating the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santiago de Cuba, will take place at the Center for Applied Linguistics of the University of the East, during the month of January 2015.

The academics will attend the event as plenary speakers: prof. Dr. Kathleen Wermke, with the conference "Before the utterance of words: Conclusions, particularities and future directions from thirty years of children's research"; the prof. Dr. Anton Nijholt with the theme "Incongruous Humor in Language and Beyond"; the prof. Dr. Dieter Fensel with the lecture "Successful online communication of tourism service providers"; and prof. Dr. Ann Bertels, who will speak on the "State of the art on linguistic corpora in Europe."

Prior to the presentation of the works by the concurrent academics, three short courses will be held by the specialists: prof. Dr. Sylviane Cardey, from the Center Tesnière: "Language Modeling"; prof. Dr. Olatz Arregi, from the IXA Group: "Machine learning for NLP. Two practical cases: coreference resolution and semantic role labeling"; and prof. Dr. Cristián Noemí, academic and director of the Department of Arts and Letters at the University of La Serena: "Inference tasks and discursive robustness."
