The Mineduc benefit renewal process for 2015 (FSCU and Scholarships) is the one with the largest call during the year. It is expected that around 4 thousand students will come to complete the procedure. 

This process is aimed mainly at students who during 2014 were beneficiaries of tuition or FSCU scholarships from the Mineduc (new and old students) or who had suspended or postponed their studies partially or totally during the current year and that are renewals of the benefit.

In this sense, the coordinator of the Student Welfare Department of the ULS, dependent on the DGAE, Patricia Astroza Morgan, expressed the importance of students completing the process early to prevent the system from collapsing due to the number of students who They will carry out the procedure. “This is one of the most massive processes of socioeconomic accreditation of our students at the University, therefore, we require that they use the systems that we have created, the technologies that we have incorporated into the process and therefore that they do so within the deadlines and hopefully within the first few days so that in this way they do not clog the systems at the end of the process,” he specified.

Astroza also emphasized that the DGAE put all the documentation on its web platform to make the process less complex. "Completing the form is done from the same Phoenix platform, an online form is made that is only printed and delivered to the respective social worker of the Campus and the forms that can be requested are now available on the website of our General Directorate of Student Affairs and on the student platform,” explained the professional. 

The deadlines for submitting the Mineduc 2015 Benefit Renewal form and socioeconomic background are from October 06 to November 07 in the offices of the social workers of each Campus. It should be noted that the form is available on the students' Phoenix platform, which must be completed online and then downloaded and submitted along with the required documentation.

The team from the University of La Serena, made up of 6 students, achieved 7 medals in this international competition.

An outstanding participation was achieved by the delegation of judokas from the University of La Serena that recently participated in the XIII International Judo Championship "Shinzo Murayama, Pioneer of Judo in Peru", held in the city of Arequipa.

In the Junior category, Matías Veliz Gómez (cat. -73 kg. Mechanical Execution Engineer), won the gold medal; while in Adults, Fabián Veliz Luna (cat. -81 kg. Civil Engineering) took the gold medal. In this last category, Julio Ávalos Godoy (cat. -82 kg. Civil Engineering) won the silver medal and Ángelo Veliz Gómez (cat. -66 kg. Mechanical Execution Engineer); Rodolfo Robles (cat. -73 kg. Construction Engineer), Fernando Acevedo (cat. -73 kg. Mechanical Execution Engineer) and Fabián Veliz Luna (cat. -81 kg.), achieved bronze medals.

The judoka Julio Ávalos stood out in this tournament, who in the -81 kg category, won his fights and competed in the final with the Peruvian national team, who came from his participation in the Judo World Cup by Categories, where he achieved a great performance.

Judo teacher CN 3rd Dan Fernando Astudillo Santibañez, coach of the ULS students, with whom he has been working for 7 years and training hard three times a week, valued the performance and effort of the students, especially for the level of competitors.

The members of the Mining Circus celebrated their 63 years of life with former members.

The only circus in the world made up of university students celebrated its 63rd anniversary this August 26, the date on which its first performance in 1951 is commemorated. And as part of this celebration, former and current members of the Circus met for a lunch of camaraderie that took place at the Central Casino of the University of La Serena. 

Present on the occasion was the president of the corporation of former members and friends of the Mining Circus, Patricio Vejar, who expressed the importance of the circus in the cultural identity of the Coquimbo Region and that continues to motivate those who were once an active part of the grouping. “It is an event that we look forward to every year, especially the former members who try to be here on that date, August 26, and make the effort to come from different parts of the country, even from abroad,” he commented.

Likewise, the director of the Mining Circus, Leonardo Castillo, emphasized the family spirit that exists between the former and current members. “We are a family, we have always considered ourselves that way, therefore the people who once belonged to the circus are still from the Mining Circus, what happens is that now they do not perform. The students are in charge of the artistic part, presentation of the circus, active members and the former members are part of the family,” he noted.

"The call was made to strengthen ties, we are always in contact with the former circuses, now we are with the head of the School of Mines, where we also exchanged opinions and ideas that we are going to try to strengthen so that the circus can emerge." to other mining sectors,” he said. 

Finally, the director of the ULS Mining Engineering Department, Dr. Alfonso Carvajal, valued the importance of the Mining Circus for the School of Mines. “We have been talking with the coordinators of the Circus and the main link that the circus should have is with the mining industry, and the link that unites this would be the Department of Mines. "We are talking about possible activities that could be carried out in some mining centers and we are even thinking with some universities from neighboring countries like Argentina, there is an opportunity, we have to develop it, organize it a little bit into a project," he concluded.

On August 26, 1979, the Alumni Center of the University of La Serena was formed and one of its main objectives was to support low-income students.

Today, 35 years later, that noble work is still valid and in 2014 there are 6 students awarded scholarships by the ULS Alumni Center, through the General Directorate of Student Affairs.

Carlos López, president of the Alumni Center for 12 years, stated that it is important to strengthen the ties between those who were students and the institution. “It is vital to strengthen ties with the University to give it more strength, we want to form ties again through this Directorate, through any level of the University, to be able to generate all these ties,” he stressed.

López, superintendent of Chancado in Chuquicamata, recalled how the Alumni Center was formed and valued the DGAE as a channel of help to students. “It was born to support low-income students and reward excellence, but over the years we have diversified and supported social issues. We had 7 scholarship students, today there are 6 from different careers at the University through the DGAE, Miguel Zuleta, Patricia Astroza, and the entire team who are the support channel for a work that we are very proud of, it is a wonderful work” , he expressed.

Finally, the director of Student Affairs, Mg. Miguel Zuleta valued the contribution made by the Alumni Center and the relevance of the University not only providing knowledge, but also noble values ​​such as solidarity. “This is a sign that the people, the students of our study house, not only acquire knowledge, but also have the aspect of solidarity and recognize the study house beyond the curriculum,” he mentioned.

Not only the city of La Serena celebrates its anniversary, the Mining Circus, cultural heritage of the Coquimbo Region, turns 63 years old.

On August 26, 1951, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the city of La Serena and the School of Mines in our regional capital, the Mining Circus held its first performance.

However, its origins date back to the “mining machitunes” of the XNUMXth century. Rituals that were carried out in the small mines of Norte Chico, where workers shared food, humor and songs around a bonfire. Tradition that was taken over by the mining students of the university, adding circus acts that would ultimately be the origin of the now traditional Mining Circus.

From its beginnings to the present day, the ULS Mining Circus has been present within the artistic endeavor of the Coquimbo Region and the country, standing out as an initiative developed exclusively by students, who are organizers, artists and collaborators.

Regarding this new year of life of the group, the director of Student Affairs, Mg. Miguel Zuleta, highlighted the importance of the Mining Circus at the University. “The Mining Circus has a long history since the times of the School of Mines and has been shaped by students, with artistic quality, transcending borders with presentations in San Juan, Argentina, and other places in Chile,” he said.

It is worth remembering that during the last few weeks, the Mining Circus, dependent on the Department of Extracurricular Activities of DGAE, has performed with great success in Punitaqui and Pisco Elqui. In addition, other presentations are being scheduled for the second half of 2014.

Complementing the work carried out by the General Directorate of Student Affairs this year, 52 pairs of safety shoes were delivered to the officials of the 7 University Casinos.
