The Limarí Campus of the University of La Serena hosted various higher education institutions from the commune of Ovalle, in a baby soccer championship for women and men that lasted throughout the month of July.

In this contest, the representatives of the University of La Serena, made up of students from the Agronomic Engineering and Pedagogy courses in Basic General Education, obtained third place (women) and fourth place (men), with the winners being the Institute Santo Tomás in women and the Central Valley Professional Institute in men.

The matches took place on the Multicourt of the university campus, in front of a large audience, also highlighting the sportsmanship spirit of the participating players, who were present at the awards ceremony held on the last date of the championship.

The ULS group had an outstanding participation in the gymnasium of the town of Elquina together with the Frigol Organization.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Mining Circus of the University of La Serena participated in the circus organized by the Sports and Youth Association, Frigol, in Pisco Elqui.

"It was surprising, we didn't really expect it, we were very well attended to, we didn't expect the recognition, it is the achievement of all the young students who participate in the circus, they are the deserving ones, I only represent them."

Finally, Castillo expressed his satisfaction with the presentation of the young people before about 200 people in the gymnasium of the town of Elquina. “We are happy, the audience was large, they received us very well, the guys from the Mining Circus did things as we had planned, I am very happy,” he concluded.

The group achieved second place in the "Barrio del Carmen" International Competition that took place in Murcia.

Before traveling to Spain, the Tuna San Bartolomé of the University of La Serena promised to leave Chile's name well in one of the most important competitions in the world of the Tunas; and so it was, since it achieved second place in the competition and also received a very good impression from specialized critics. 

The International Tuna Competition "Barrio del Carmen" in Murcia is one of the most traditional in the Peninsula where Tuna was born more than 600 years ago, when medieval university students sought to preserve popular and romantic singing. 

Mauricio Cortés, director of Tuna San Bartolomé, stated that although achieving second place in the competition is important, what was essential was the experience of being in Spain. "For the first time it was quite satisfactory, we only sought to make a good presentation and the experience, that the young people and officials of the University who have been in Tuna for many years could share with people from the land of Tuna, younger people and others with a lot of experience," he said.

tuna prize 2In this sense, Cortés maintained that being in Spain is the fulfillment of a dream that originated in 1993 when Sixto Cortés, his father, founded the Tuna San Bartolomé of the University of La Serena. "Up on stage we feel that we were the best and That's how the people there made us feel, even the kids from Mexico themselves said that the prize should have been ours, but apart from that, the fact of being there allowed us to feel more than winners, arriving in Spain, a dream we have had since la Tuna was founded," said the musician.

Finally, for Sixto Cortés the idea is to return again to the Motherland, since it was an enriching experience for all those who traveled. "The dream of all the Tunas of reaching the country of birth of the Tunas, for our group it was a dream and Being able to get to the Murcia competition was unforgettable for the boys (…). The boys left a very good impression at the event, very good reviews from knowledgeable people and we were very happy thinking about returning again," he concluded.

The Tuna San Bartolomé tour to Spain was carried out thanks to the contributions of the Regional Government and the municipalities of La Serena and Coquimbo, in addition to the sponsorship of the University of La Serena and the Cruz del Tercer Milenio Foundation.

Olivares stressed that this is not the first time that the ULS Casinos receive an inspection and comply with all the requirements. "Regarding the type of food, the amount of calories and proteins that we give to the students. This is not the first time that (casinos) meet 100% of the requirements,” she noted.

On December 13, 1993, Professor Sixto Cortés founded the Tuna San Bartolomé of the University of La Serena with the purpose of preserving popular and romantic singing. It's been almost 21 years and the Tuna San Bartolomé is still in force. Next week he travels to Europe to seek international consolidation at the Tunas Festival in Murcia, Spain, the land where the tradition was born more than 600 years ago.

Eleven people make up the delegation that will spend 9 days in Spain participating in the XVIII Version of the International Tunas Contest “Barrio Carmen”, an opportunity in which they will also carry out a cultural exchange with the University of Granada.

Mauricio Cortés, director of Tuna and son of Sixto Cortés, its founder, said he was excited about the opportunity to travel to a meeting as important as the one in Murcia. “We have wanted to be there for many years, it is also a Competition, it is competitive, there are several categories, including best tambourine, soloist and best Tuna, an award that we hope to bring to Chile (…). “We are aiming for the biggest prize, which is the best Tuna of the Contest,” he noted. 

Likewise, the general director of Student Affairs of the University of La Serena, Mg. Miguel Zuleta highlighted the importance of Tuna representing the region. “It is quite emotional to say goodbye to our students so that they can be ambassadors of the Coquimbo Region in Spain (…). The contribution of the Regional Government is very important because it recognizes the University of La Serena and the contribution that the students provide,” he said.

Representing the institutions that support this initiative, the regional councilor, José Montoya, pointed out that “I would like to value this activity that the University of La Serena, through the Tuna San Bartolomé, represents the fact of how several institutions have jointly put each one resources to participate in this event that is of international level and where the best quality exponents come to this meeting. We are happy that it is the Tuna San Bartolomé that represents our region and we hope that their participation goes well, the Regional Government contributed its grain of sand, and this helps the cultural exchange with Spain and Chile."

For his part, the extension director of the Municipality of La Serena and organizer of the International Meeting of Tunas of La Serena, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary this summer, Claudio Godoy, appreciated that the Tuna San Bartolomé travels to Spain to represent the country. “We as a municipality have felt very honored to support with a grain of sand so that this trip of one of the most prestigious Tunas in the north of the country such as San Bartolomé can take place, to be able to reach an event of such importance. as is the Murcia Festival.”

At the same time, Horacio Jorquera, from the Municipality of Coquimbo, stated that it is important for the Buenos Aires municipality to support this type of cultural initiatives. “For us it is a pleasure, a pleasure to help this Tuna, one of the most emblematic in the region (…). We believe in these young people who have been in this activity for years, which is well known among university students,” he indicated.

The students of the extracurricular subject of Acrylic and Oil Painting showed their work in the hall of the Ignacio Domeyko Campus. 

Surprise was caused by the exhibition “From Calculation to Expression”, carried out by the students of the extracurricular subject of Painting in Acrylic and Oil, since during the afternoon of Tuesday the hall space of the Ignacio Domeyko Campus was intervened with the works developed in the workshop in the first semester.

The exhibition shows the best works done by the students of this extracurricular subject. The teacher, Marcia Parra, was proud of the results achieved. “The results are obvious, there are many students who achieved incredible results, working on composition and color, even though they had never worked with this technique,” ​​she explained.

Parra also expressed the importance of using the spaces of the study house to show art to the student community. “The work has been very well received, people have said that it has been incredible how the children achieved their goals,” she commented.

Víctor Soto, a ULS Architecture student, valued the opportunity to exhibit his work alongside that of his classmates. “I didn't expect so much positive reaction from people, I really liked the result of the workshop (…) that's what we wanted to achieve, expectation and that they are seeing something different for a while on Campus,” said the student.

Words that were joined by Javier Carvajal, who stated that “the exhibition speaks of a collective identity of the group, integration, participation, being cooperative, trying in some way to generate something worthy of what one did, a painting or whatever the manifestation of art, it is something very personal, for a reason it has to be put with due respect and people can appreciate it in a good way,” concluded the Architecture student.
