This Monday, July 7, at 16:00 p.m., the second psychoeducational workshop “Healthy Future” will be held, organized by the Student Health Department of the University of La Serena.

The activity, which will take place in the meeting room of the Department. of Health, is part of the “Healthy Future” program that provides support to students who are overweight or obese, with the help of professionals and specialists in the subject.

Lorena Bolados, social worker at the Department of Health, pointed out that in the workshop they will discuss the similarity that exists between addiction to food and drugs. “Current studies show that people who enter a weight loss program sometimes have the same symptoms as a person with addiction to alcohol and other drugs,” she explained.

In this sense, Bolados expressed that during the workshop they will see techniques to control anxiety during weight loss. “When people begin to reduce the amounts of food, they can transfer the object of addiction in this case to increasing tobacco or consuming more alcohol or they can have a dry relapse, such as dreaming about a lot of food,” he said. 

Finally, it should be noted that the admission of students to the “Healthy Future” Program is throughout the academic year and has the support of the following professionals: general practitioner, nutritionist, nurse, psychologist and social worker.

The activity was attended by parents and guardians of the establishment, who saw how their children are developing their artistic facets. 

Dancing and a lot of fun was experienced at the Los Papayitos Kindergarten in the celebration of “Family Day”, a day that featured artistic presentations by boys and girls from the different levels of the garden.

The director of the establishment, Valeria Milla, expressed that the celebration was born because “we do not celebrate mother's or father's day, since the family today is not the traditional ones, for the same reason we wanted to celebrate this instance, since "It is important that the entire family participates in the educational development of children."

Milla also highlighted the participation of parents and guardians in the activity. “There was a lot of participation, the activity had collaboration with the Parents Center, so we were very happy this first time we celebrated Family Day,” she stated.

Likewise, Javiera Manghi, representative of Los Papayitos and student of Journalism at the University of La Serena, appreciated that these instances are generated to participate. “I think it's good that we have the possibility of celebrating Family Day, it helps us share, both with the children and with the aunts (...). Plus you know that they prepared all week learning dances and as a mother it is always nice to see that dedication,” she noted.

Futsal

The event that takes place every Saturday on the multi-court of the Andrés Bello Campus, is experiencing the defining matches.

The women's futsal championship, organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the University of La Serena, is already in its fourth round, with only one day left to play to find out which teams will qualify for the final round.

The leadership in group A is in the hands of the team made up of the ULS alumni, with 12 points, of course, closely followed by Industrial Civil Engineering with 7 points. In last place is Kinesiology without registering wins or draws.

Meanwhile, in group B, the leading team is Obras Mix with 10 points, followed by Nursing with 6 points. The last place in the group is shared by Journalism and Pedagogy in Basic Education with 1 point.

The top scorer of the tournament is the Industrial Civil student, Sindy Araneda, with 9 goals, second place is disputed by the former students, María José Espinoza and Carolina Pizarro, and the Nursing student, Camila Ávalos, with 7 goals each.

This Saturday the fifth date will be played, where the teams classified for the final round will be defined, which are 3 for each group.

The teacher of the women's soccer team, Álvaro Godoy, stated that the championship has raised great expectations, since the number of teams registered is greater than they expected. “At first we thought that with 6 teams interested in participating we were satisfied, but there was a very important response from 11 teams, among them a team of former students of the University who told us to attend. So far the dates have been developed continuously and systematically,” he indicated.

With the aim of providing parental skills tools to parents and/or guardians of “Los Papayitos” Kindergarten, the psychoeducational workshop “Growing up with Our Children” was held, which had psychologists from CAPSI as speakers and which is the first of several workshops that will be held between now and the end of the year.

Vanesa Díaz, manager of the garden, thanked the workshop and the knowledge that was shared, highlighting “the importance of communication in the family, of communicating and for it to be effective, and dealing with problems with children with a lot of patience and affection. and avoid threats and aggressive behavior; “You learned with your parents' patterns and that no longer applies,” she said.

Likewise, Bianca Payacán, CAPSI psychologist, expressed that during the workshop basic tools were given to parents so that they have a more harmonious relationship with their children and highlighted their participation. “I think they learned a lot of things in relation to the limits and competencies that their children must have in order to grow together (…) that they come to an instance here to participate and that they inform themselves and that they were given tools that may be basic, it is already a contribution to the development of their children,” he indicated. 

Finally, Marisol Avilés, social worker at the “Los Papayitos” Garden, emphasized the role that the establishment plays not only in the comprehensive education of children, but also as help for parents. “The idea is to be able to provide tools to children. parents so that they can better exercise their role (…). "They say, no one teaches us how to be dads, but it never hurts to strengthen the skills they have as a dad, rather than focusing on weaknesses," she said.

The nutritionist at the Casino of the University of La Serena and developer of the program, Miyoshi Shu Santander, stated that the training is designed for the well-being of all those who make up the University. ''The objective is to train the staff in terms of the flow of food production, that includes the reception, the storage of the service that is delivered here,'' she said. 

Likewise, Shu emphasized the importance of the knowledge that is shared in the various workshops held throughout the year, in order to provide nutritional support to the students who eat at the casino. ''We work with a type of food that is standardized in terms of safety, which is what we see in the Hygiene and Food Handling training, it has to be varied, which is what we look for every day with the provision of raw materials, and balanced, which is what we are looking for with the adaptation of nutritional contributions,'' he explained.

Finally, the head of University Casinos, Víctor Olivares, highlighted how the various levels of the DGAE work together for the benefit of the students. ''One of the biggest national health problems is overweight, and one of our concerns is to give what corresponds to our students and thus be consistent with the programs that our University is incorporated, which are those of healthy living and that At the same time, we coordinate them with our DGAE unit, the Department of Student Health and with Sports, so we do triangulation for the well-being of the students," he indicated.

The Student Health Department, belonging to the DGAE, is carrying out the preventive medical-dental examination for all first-year students, completely free of charge, in addition to the EMPA (Adult Preventive Medicine Examination), which is aimed at all students. regulars.In this sense, the dental surgeon of the Department of Health, Astrid Medel, reiterated the call for first-year students who have not taken the dental exam. ''Last year the program was implemented for the first time and the turnout was very low, I did a study of all the students I saw and only 26% of the total students who entered were covered, which was close to 1.600 students per year. past. Likewise, the head of the Student Health Department, Néstor López, emphasized the importance of said exam. ''It is intended to make a diagnosis of the oral health status of the students to offer them the possibility of recovering their oral health, their teeth during their period of university studies so that when they leave, they have optimal oral health.'' . He also regretted the low participation of students, however, he expressed hope that this would be reversed. ''We have had a lukewarm participation from students, despite a series of efforts that have been made to disseminate and raise awareness of the importance of all these preventive exams,'' he said.
