The members of the Mining Circus celebrated their 63 years of life with former members.

The only circus in the world made up of university students celebrated its 63rd anniversary this August 26, the date on which its first performance in 1951 is commemorated. And as part of this celebration, former and current members of the Circus met for a lunch of camaraderie that took place at the Central Casino of the University of La Serena.

Present on the occasion was the president of the corporation of former members and friends of the Mining Circus, Patricio Vejar, who expressed the importance of the circus in the cultural identity of the Coquimbo Region and that continues to motivate those who were once an active part of the grouping. “It is an event that we look forward to every year, especially the former members who try to be here on that date, August 26, and make the effort to come from different parts of the country, even from abroad,” he commented.

Likewise, the director of the Mining Circus, Leonardo Castillo, emphasized the family spirit that exists between the former and current members. “We are a family, we have always considered ourselves that way, therefore the people who once belonged to the circus are still from the Mining Circus, what happens is that now they do not perform. The students are in charge of the artistic part, presentation of the circus, active members and the former members are part of the family,” he noted.

Finally, the director of the ULS Mining Engineering Department, Dr. Alfonso Carvajal, valued the importance of the Mining Circus for the School of Mines. “We have been talking with the coordinators of the Circus and the main link that the circus should have is with the mining industry, and the link that unites this would be the Department of Mines. "We are talking about possible activities that could be carried out in some mining centers and we are even thinking with some universities from neighboring countries like Argentina, there is an opportunity, we have to develop it, organize it a little bit into a project," he concluded.
