This week's guest is the prominent folklorist and academic Raúl “Talo” Pinto. Cuequero and payador, “Talo” Pinto is one of the few northern singers dedicated to the art of paya. Cultivator of the improvised cueca, a genuine musical poetic expression of the Port of Coquimbo, he is a faithful representative of the folklore traditions of our region and the country.
This folklorist was born in the port of Coquimbo, in the Plaza Domeyko sector, receiving his nickname since he was a child. When he was little he was nourished by listening to Elena Montoya “La Criollita”, who lived near his house, and to in-laws who sang and improvised cuecas, among them the cuequero Guillermo Guajardo, cousin of his uncle Juan Olivares.
Being a restless student at the Coquimbo High School and thanks to his teacher Ruth Campos, he learned to recreate himself with music and at the age of 14 while he was in his second half year, he entered the Folkloric Ensemble of the State Technical University, under the direction of the remembered professor Sixto Cortés Alcayaga, who welcomed him despite his young age, starting from that moment an outstanding musical career, which has allowed him to travel the country spreading his art and adding an innumerable number of musical and personal relationships with figures of Chilean singing.
With more than 40 years on stage, Raúl “Talo” Pinto obtained the Regional Arts and Culture Award in 2016, an initiative of the National Council of Culture and the Arts in the Coquimbo Region. This award aimed to recognize the musical cultural trajectory of artists, who through their work have contributed significantly to the local musical heritage, preserving and promoting the cultural and musical identity in the Region.
“Our Sounds” is a project promoted by the Department of Corporate Communications of the ULS, which was the winner of the 2018 National Music Fund, Chilean Music Radio Broadcasting line, within the framework of the work to celebrate the 55 years of existence of FM University Radio.
