Next Wednesday, May 06, in the Exhibition Hall of the University of La Serena, the conference “The Enforceability of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights” will be held, the second of the 2015 cycle of the Raúl Bitrán Nachary Chair on Human Rights that began last April at the university.

The speakers of this chair, whose entry is free, will be Dr. Leonardo Moreno Núñez, executive director of the Foundation for Overcoming Poverty, and Dr. Rodolfo Ignacio Figueroa García-Huidobro, professor at the University's School of Law Diego Portales, who will review the characteristics of economic, social and cultural rights, enforceability, indicators and social policies with a human rights perspective.

In this regard, the director of Extension of the ULS, Dr. Catalina Cvitanic, invited all those who want to be part of this new cycle of the Raúl Bitrán Chair and noted that “this cycle of conferences addresses topics relevant to our current society and in particular for our university community, since as teachers we must become part of the teaching of human rights, for example, it is important and necessary that those who graduate as teachers leave with the appropriate skills to work with diversity."

Finally, it should be noted that the activity, aimed at the general public and which begins at 11:30 a.m., is organized by the ULS Extension Directorate and the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) and this year it has focused on topic on human rights.

The pedagogical comedy is focused on all audiences and playfully recreates various topics related to mathematics.

This Tuesday, May 05, starting at 10:00 a.m., the play “Who Killed the Eight?” will be presented in the Ignacio Domeyko Room of the University of La Serena. Revealing Mathematical Mysteries”, whose creation and staging is in charge of Dr. Catalina Cvitanic and the Theater Cast of the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena (ÉTÉULS).

The work is a pedagogical comedy that playfully recreates various mathematical topics, such as the geometry of space, arithmetic, properties of numbers and others, giving the viewer the possibility of getting involved with the problems posed.

In this regard, the Director of Extension, Catalina Cvitanic, issued an invitation to witness this play. “This work is a support for teachers since the experience with previous works shows us that students really love the topics and riddles presented, it is possible in some way to 'humanize' Mathematics and make it close to every viewer from 3rd grade onwards. basic to 4th grade,” he noted.

The activity is open to the public and will have two functions, one at 10:00 hrs. and another starting at 11:30 a.m., and will have a value of $1.500 pesos.

With the participation of students from the Buenos Aires community, this day dedicated to the Nobel Prize winner was held.

The second Mistralian School Meeting 2015 was recently held at the Casa del Arte Rural in the La Cantera sector of Coquimbo, in which 7th and 8th grade students from the Lucila Godoy Alcayaga School participated in a class-workshop to learn relevant aspects of Gabriela's life in the Buenos Aires commune.

The Mistralian School Meetings allow primary and secondary school students to interact and share knowledge about the poet's work in areas such as teaching, culture and social matters. 

The initiative is developed by the Regional Government of Coquimbo with the support of the University of La Serena, through its Mistraliano Center, which contributes with the contents of the workshops. And on this occasion, the support of the Municipality of Coquimbo, the entity that manages the property that belonged to Gabriela, was added.

second mistralian encounter 2Miguel Sánchez, head of the Planning Division of the Regional Government, stated that “we believe that it is important to provide knowledge to new generations about our greatest exponent of regional culture, such as Gabriela Mistral. For that we have been building this Mistralian Route through different works and generating a story that must be maintained over time, and that must become a valuable cultural tourist heritage of the region."

Along with highlighting the holding of this second meeting, Dr. Rolando Manzano, director of the Mistralian Center of the University of La Serena, pointed out that with the objective of strengthening the Camino a Gabriela Route. “The idea is to put together a Mistralian Calendar that begins on November 15 and ends in the month of May, with some specific activities. We think that this is the way we have adopted the Mistralian celebration, celebrating with events, with meetings and students who can participate, create and give their opinion, as is the case with the Mistralian Meetings,” he indicated.

In the same sense, Manzano highlighted that it is important “to be able to incorporate people and particularly students, so that they experience what reading, writing and thinking and critical judgment with a high level of vision are, which is a bit of the Mistralian vision.”

For her part, Rina Araya, Cultural Coordinator of the Municipality of Coquimbo, stated that “for us it is super relevant to manage one of the important milestones that are within the Camino a Gabriela Mistral Route, this house in the La Cantera sector that was restored and that it is now enabled to begin with programming and activities around the life and work of Gabriela Mistral.”

To date, dozens of educational establishments have benefited, including visits to prison institutions as part of social reintegration activities, through culture.

“The orchestra goes to your school” is the title of the initiative of the Symphony Orchestra of the University of La Serena that seeks to bring orchestrated music to students of educational establishments in the Province of Elqui. This activity is financed by the National Council of Culture and the Arts through the National Music Promotion Fund and resources provided by the corporation and the “Red de Amigos Orquesta Sinfónica U. de La Serena”.

The first cycle began this April 28 at the Francis School and the Gregorio Cordovez Liceo and will continue on April 29 and 30 at the Horizontes School and Caleta San Pedro School, where the String Orchestra will perform, and at the School Metodista de Coquimbo and the Diego Portales Lyceum, where the Bronze Quintet will perform, both groups formed by members of the University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra. In the words of Francis Oyarzún, director of the Francis School, “it was an excellent presentation like the ones they have done before, a special moment for our students. I feel that it is not only the intellectual area and being in class that is important for our students, but that this, the culture, the music, the sport is part of the comprehensive development of the students and as a school we promote this and we like it.”

In this way, it is essential for the La Seren University Symphony Orchestra to bring orchestral music to all children who for some reason do not have access to this type of music, and thus, contribute to the development of audiences in the region.

The above was also pointed out by the regional director of the Council for Culture and the Arts, Lenka Rivera. "Our joint work with the Orchestra of the University of La Serena makes important contributions to the educational development of students, since we understand that for comprehensive training it is necessary to be in contact with this type of instances that open the minds of young people, beyond the contents that their schools give them”, he stated.

Cristian Monreal, executive producer of the Symphony Orchestra, has the same vision, for whom “this is an extremely important instance for us, not only in terms of the formation of new audiences, but it allows us to bring our institution closer to the community, delivering not only music, but also knowledge about its history and that of the instruments, as well as their sounds”.

In total, 18 concerts will be held, distributed in three cycles. Each cycle will consist of three days, in which 2 daily concerts will be held.

The Department of Psychology leads this initiative that seeks to make the community aware of issues in the area and thus provide them with tools on various topics.

This Wednesday, April 29, a new Cycle of Academic Lectures on Psychology will begin in the Exhibition Hall of the U. de La Serena, the first presentation of which will be given by the director of the Department of Psychology at the ULS, Dr. Mauricio González.

It should be noted that this activity has been carried out successfully since 2012, which is why this fourth cycle of conferences called “Psychology and Contemporary Society” was scheduled, which will begin with the conference What are emotions for?

In this regard, Dr. Mauricio González, maintained that the objective of this cycle of conferences is to achieve a rapprochement between the Department of Psychology and the community through conferences given by academics from the ULS, without it being necessary to have a prior mastery of psychology and at the same time that the topics are of interest to the general public.

Dr. González also added that “this conference aims to explain in simple terms what function emotions play and how they can help us live a fuller life and thus better understand why they sometimes cause us suffering. In addition, some tips will be given to adequately manage your emotional life.”

Meanwhile, the director of Extension of the ULS, Dr. Catalina Cvitanic, invited the community to be part of this cycle of conferences. “These types of activities allow the community, both university and the general public, to learn a little more about the meaning of emotions and current advances in the development of neuroscience,” she indicated. 

The activity, whose entry is free, will take place starting at 11:30 a.m. at the venue located at Benavente 950, La Serena.

The ULS teachers in charge of the exhibition gave a talk to the students of the Expression Techniques course.

A group of students from the Design major (mention in Communication) from the University of La Serena, had the opportunity to visit the engraving and painting exhibition "Telúrico: Erupciones" that is exhibited at the Palace Cultural Center of Coquimbo and belongs to to local academics and artists, Luis Rivera and Hernán Godoy.

During the visit, the ULS teachers gave a talk to these students of the Expression Techniques course, who learned details of the engraving techniques (woodcut, lithography, silkscreen, collagraphy and etching) and painting (mixed on wood, canvas and reused elements) with which the works were worked. 

The human figure, the imaginary landscapes and the typical characters of La Serena, are the central themes of the pieces in this exhibition that will be open to the public until April 30.
