The first conference of the cycle, to be held in the ULS Exhibition Hall, will feature the participation of the director of the National Institute of Human Rights, Ms. Lorena Fries, and the representative in Chile of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Human Rights, Dr. Humberto Henderson.

On April 15, a new cycle of conferences of the Raúl Bitrán Nachary 2015 Chair begins at the University of La Serena, which is aimed at debating and reflecting on current human rights issues and their implications in the different areas of social development. and university work, to respond to the challenges of the regional and national context.

The initiative, organized by the Directorate of Extension and the National Institute of Human Rights, and sponsored by the Department of Education of the ULS, will have the participation of the director of the National Institute of Human Rights, Ms. Lorena Fries, and the representative in Chile of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Dr. Humberto Henderson, who will be in charge of the inaugural conference : “What do we understand today by Human Rights?”

In this regard, one of the members of the organizing committee, Edgardo Carabantes, an academic at the ULS Department of Education, referred to the conference. “The idea we are working on is from the conception of human rights, which is very broad. We have tried to separate a little the mental association that is immediately made when talking about human rights with what happened during the time of the dictatorship and the truth is that a distinction must be made. There are crimes against humanity, but this is not the only thing since human rights have to do with the right to water, access to health, work, education, a clean environment, immigration, gender, childhood, among others. , the teacher pointed out.

The academic also explained what the modality will be for the day on April 15. “In the morning there will be exhibitors for all audiences and in the afternoon there will be training given by the National Institute of Human Rights to academics from the University of La Serena and other people interested in the topic, on the different topics about human rights, which include interculturality, gender and disability, among others.”

Finally, Carabantes highlighted the importance of the activity and the different approaches that the cycle of conferences and workshops will cover between the months of April and October, pointing out that “this initiative has to do with the mission and pedagogical model of the University, which points out that the graduate and graduate of the University has to have social and ethical responsibility and within that scheme is where the theme of human rights is inserted, which is social responsibility for others.

It should be noted that the first conference of the Raúl Bitrán Nachary Chair will take place in the ULS Exhibition Room, located at 950 Benavente Street, in the city of La Serena, starting at 10:00 a.m., and is Open to the public in the morning. You are also invited to join the academics for the workshops that the guest speakers will give in the afternoon.

libro 1

University authorities, academics, officials, relatives of the author and special guests attended the ULS Extension Center, where the book was launched, adding to the list of 70 texts published by the ULS Publishing House.

The University of La Serena, through its Editorial, presented the book “Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures”, by Dr. Tomás Guendelman Bedrack, a prominent engineering professional, recognized nationally and internationally for his valuable contributions to the quality of life, based on his studies and mathematical models applied to structural engineering.

On the occasion, the Rector of the state corporation, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, expressed his pride in presenting the work published under the ULS seal and being able to count on the presence of its author, who has an academic career that distinguishes him, both for his contribution to technical knowledge as well as the exaltation of spiritual values, manifested in various publications of a humanistic and cultural nature.

“Dr. Guendelman has been a permanent collaborator of the University of La Serena, supporting the professional training of numerous generations of engineers of the highest level. I would like to sincerely thank him for the contribution he makes with this publication and for everything he has taught on a professional and human level,” said Dr. Avilés.

libro 2The highest authority of the ULS also highlighted the human merits of the author, civil engineer, Master of Sciences, professor at the University of Chile and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of La Serena (2008), who during his studies and professional work in California (United States) - in the golden years of the development of modern engineering - he was able to share and interact with world leaders in structural and seismic engineering.

Meanwhile, the dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the ULS, Dr. Mario Durán, was in charge of presenting the book, sharing an interesting moment with the attendees, by reviewing various passages of the evolution experienced by the academics and students, in engineering teaching methods.

"In this context, the figure of Tomás Guendelman stands out as the father of Structural Engineering in Chile, who learned classical methods at the university, but who could have been at the right moment when technological development favored his learning, with the incursion of computational methods,” said the dean.

Dr. Durán also recalled that after his studies in the United States, the engineer returned to Chile to dedicate himself to teaching and at the same time founded an engineering office that was a pioneer in the massive use of computers for structural analysis, mainly in buildings. , which in the opinion of Dr. Durán, who was also his student, was more than twenty years ahead of the massive use of this technological equipment in structural engineering with the use of PCs and the respective analysis programs. “Within the merits of the text presented, there is an adequate combination of rigorous theoretical developments with the practical application of modern structural engineering in Chile,” he stated.

libro 3Subsequently, Dr. Guendelman shared part of his experiences as an academic in La Serena and remembered with special appreciation those who have been his disciples (several of them present in the room). He stated that among his students were also his children and his brother, with whom he traveled to the Coquimbo Region to share academic experiences between students from the capital and students from the University of La Serena.

Regarding the text, he commented that a selection of notes made up the first edition, which was published abroad in 2013. Then the copy was rigorously reviewed and the possibility of publishing through the Universidad de La Serena Publishing House arose.

Tomás Guendelman especially thanked Rector Avilés, Dean Durán and the person in charge of Editorial ULS, Alejandro Abufom, for the support provided for the publication of the work and his wife and children, for their permanent support and support.

Finally, he commented that the book “Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures” is a humble publication in terms of its form, but it seeks to transmit a spirit more than the content. “If we appreciate its spirit, we can appreciate its content and if we appreciate the content, we can use it,” said the author.

At the end of the ceremony, Guendelman symbolically presented a copy dedicated to the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés.

semi holy orchestra

The participation of the Serenense trumpeter Sergio Fuentes Ibarra stands out.

This Thursday, April 02, at 20:00 p.m., at the Municipal Theater of the regional capital, the University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra will present its second concert of the season, as a prelude to the commemoration of Holy Week.

This second concert will be conducted by the guest conductor, Pablo Carrasco, and will feature the solo participation of the talented first trumpeter of the Universidad de La Serena Symphony Orchestra, Sergio Fuentes Ibarra, who will perform on this occasion the “Trumpet Concerto in E flat Major.” ”, opus 49 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. This concerto, composed in 1803, stands out for being one of the most popular for trumpet and for its balance between a classical style and its romantic expressiveness.

The overture “The Creatures of Prometheus”, opus 43, and the “Symphony No. 1” in C major, opus 21, both works by the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven and which, like the trumpet concerto, belong to the late classical period will also be performed. and at the beginning of romanticism. The overture, composed in 1801, is the best-known page of this ballet and is a frequent part of the orchestral repertoire, highlighting the fact that its main theme will be used in Symphony No. 1 (1799-1800) which, despite having a very classic structure, it was highly criticized for its innovative appearance.

Tickets to this event can be purchased at the Municipal Theater box office on the day of the concert. The price for the general public is $3.000, and as usual, all schoolchildren and ULS students (with ID) can enter for free. For seniors, admission costs only $2.000.

gerontological course

Motivated by her current studies with older adults, the rapporteur identified the need to prepare caregivers due to the rapid progression of these diseases.

Applications for this new course will be open until April 2, which will provide the necessary knowledge to work with people affected by Alzheimer's and other associated dementias. "Gerontological Caregivers II" is an initiative that was born as a continuation of the course "Gerontological Caregivers I" and seeks to accompany people who work with older adults with dementia, but do not have the necessary tools and preparation to do so.

The course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 21 to June 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a total duration of 28 teaching hours. It is aimed at people who have already graduated from the gerontological caregivers I course and/or have experience in caring for the elderly, prior application and a personal interview in case they have not completed the gerontological caregivers I course.

On this occasion, like the first versions, the course will be directed by Carmen Retamal Valenzuela, a nurse with a diploma in Gerontology, a Master's Degree in Applied Gerontology and an academic from the ULS Department of Nursing, who has dedicated herself to studying, researching and teach with great dedication about the adequate care of the elderly, certifying around 100 students in the five versions of the first course.

In the activity, the students will be able, among other objectives, to understand the importance of the ethical aspects that surround the care of the elderly; recognize the different types of abuse that can be generated in the caregiver/care relationship of a person with cognitive impairment; know different types of dementia, its evolution and treatment; and learn certain cognitive stimulation techniques according to the levels of dependency of people with this impairment.

On this occasion, the speaker explains the modality of the classes and to whom the activity is directed. “This is a theoretical course rather than a practical one, because basically we are going to try to learn many tools in class, but it is no longer the technical procedures part to be able to care for an older adult, but rather the more conceptual part, and there we are going to have several tools that we are going to learn to be able to give better care to the elderly. This course could also be directed, if there are places available, for families, children of people who have dementia at home, in a house and who do not know how to treat their father or mother, for example. That is also a tremendously important issue because it is very difficult for the son to understand that his father or her mother is impaired, ”she highlighted.

This course is organized by the Extension Department, in conjunction with the Nursing Department of the U. de La Serena, and has a total value of $30.000 in cash or $32.000 in two documented installments. It will be held in the ULS Exhibition Hall, located at Benavente 950, La Serena.
