Minorities in Chile was the theme that ended the cycle of conferences that brought psychology issues to the community
This activity was the latest in a variety of topics covered by ULS scholars.
The academic from the Department of Psychology ULS, Dr. © Francisco Donoso, was in charge of closing the cycle of academic conferences "Psychology and Contemporary Society" 2014. On this occasion, Donoso analyzed the concepts of minorities, some examples and history of minorities in Chile and the psychosocial, political and cultural roles played by the most relevant Chilean evangelical intellectuals of the last 40 years.
According to one of the definitions given by the academic on minorities, from social psychology it refers to "those groups that occupy a position of inferiority, either due to a social relationship of power or as a result of a social comparison with other groups, in general with the majority.” On the other hand, the academic delved into dilemmas and debates inaugurated or carried out by minorities in multicultural societies, liberalism versus multiculturalism and liberalism versus communitarianism. Also, when entering the subject of evangelical intellectuals, he referred to the new law of worship and mentioned some of the evangelical intellectuals studied.
Donoso also highlighted the importance of this study and the conclusions obtained. “For me what is relevant is having been able to access a type of actor that until now had not been systematically studied, and that shows us a not always known side of the evangelical world. The truth is that there is a paradox, this is the largest minority in statistical terms in Chile, but it is one of the most unknown, especially for certain segments”, he stated.
Precisely to learn more about the academic's study, among the audience was the Social Development secretary, Eduardo Lara, who took the opportunity to comment on a new government project. “Very interesting, because in reality they are talking precisely about what is in the President's Government, on the issue of inclusion (…), today we are working in a Ministry of Social Development, in the construction of a ministry, We are asking the indigenous peoples that if they are interested in the State, as part of the recognition and debt that we have with the indigenous people, constitute a ministry, to that extent the President believes that they will be heard and they will be able generate public policies that are much more appropriate for these minority groups.”
Finally, the director of the Department of Psychology, Dr. Mauricio González, referred to the completion of this cycle and the results obtained during the development of the activity. “I am super happy because, already with the third year of conferences, the idea has been consolidated, the interest in participating in the conferences has also been consolidated among the colleagues of the Department, and interest has also been generated in the community assist (…). This year it has been possible to appreciate a variety of topics that the Department of Psychology can offer, as is the case of Francisco Donoso, a topic that is closely associated with a research project of his, but which in turn has national and international relevance” , he concluded.
As the director of the Department rightly said, this is the third cycle organized by the Extension Department and the Department of Psychology of the University of La Serena.
