Complete information about oral cancer was what was announced in the third activity of the cycle of academic conferences “The importance of taking care of your oral health”, organized by the Directorate of Extension and the Dentistry career of the University of La Serena . In the instance, the academic, Mg. Javier Quilodrán provided relevant information in a familiar and simple language, understandable to the entire community. 

Dentists, dental students and the general public attended the third conference that addressed the topic of the importance of taking care of oral health. On the occasion, the professional went in depth and exemplified the risk factors for producing oral cancer, among which tobacco and alcohol prevail, emphasizing that the main relationship between alcohol and cancer is the dangerous thinning of the mucosa. from the mouth.

The Dentistry major also addressed in detail other risk factors, such as constant sun exposure, human papillomavirus, nutritional deficiencies, lichen planus, immunosuppression, syphilis, marijuana use, chronic irritation from prostheses, and chronic candidiasis. 

Likewise, the professional emphasized the importance of self-examination, following the recommendations to prevent cancer and the periodic professional examination at least once a year.

On the other hand, the rapporteur appreciated the attendance of a varied audience and their interest in the matter. “A very heterogeneous audience came, there were dentists, dental students, people from the community who were interested in the topic, so we were able to focus the topic for that entire audience, I tried to use terms that could be understood by the community and I think there were quite good reception from the public, people were interested, they made inquiries, it is a topic that people are interested in because there is not much information regarding the topic,” he stated. 

Meanwhile, the director of the ULS Dentistry program, Cristian Oyanadel, was satisfied with the results obtained in the cycle and in particular in this conference. “This third talk was a success, the professor was super clear. It was shown that to treat cancer, early diagnosis was very important (…). In addition, people were able to appreciate another vision of the dentist, not only focused on the teeth, but also from the point of view that there are other injuries that can cause serious problems,” he indicated.

Framed in the cycle “The Star Region: Cradle of the Astronomers of the Future”, the Extension Directorate together with the Astronomy Group of the University of La Serena, “GAULS”, will present the conference “Top Chef of the Universe” free of charge. . “The Secrets of the Cosmos Hidden in a Microwave.” The objective is to bring astronomy closer to the community of the Coquimbo Region, emphasizing students in 4th grade, massifying scientific study and promoting care for the skies of our region, which has led it to be recognized worldwide as one of the cleanest and darkest scenarios for research.

The talk will be given by the academic of the ULS Department of Physics, Carlos Lópes Carvallo, who will explain and teach the attendees the studies on the origin and evolution of the Universe, being one of the great challenges for the Astro-Chefs, who try to find the recipe and the most suitable ingredients for the preparation of an exquisite dish. 

The professional invites the entire community, especially students and schools in the region, to attend this interesting astronomical activity, which aims to surprise the audience with new revelations. “We will be able to discover how the secrets of the Universe can be hidden, even in our microwaves or on our televisions,” highlighted the ULS academic.

This new space of the station is part of the project “Mistralian Sounds: compositions that rescue the legacy of our Nobel Prize in Literature”, financed by the 2014 Media Fund.

This Sunday, November 2 at noon, the series of programs “Sonidos Mistralianos” continues, broadcast by Radio Universitaria FM, station of the University of La Serena.

The host of this space, Raúl “Talo” Pinto, will talk in this second program with Susana Pacheco Tirado, a normalista teacher, with a specialization in the musical area, and a graduate in education, about her experience as a teacher and her vision of Gabriela Mistral. The teacher has dedicated herself to researching and publishing several books, including "Sembrando Abecedarios", which talks about the living history of rural teachers, and "Isabel Bongard", about the life of the founder of the La Serena Normal School .
