The meeting is a training initiative born in 2012 with the purpose of generating an instance of study, work and reflection on the French horn.

In the Department of Music of the University of La Serena, the Second International Meeting of Horns in Chile will take place from October 1 to 5, an event that has the support of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CNCA) and that It will bring together musicians, professors, and university and school students, who will participate intensely in the different workshops and master classes that will take place.

The Second International Meeting of Horns in Chile is a training initiative born in 2012 with the purpose of generating an instance of study, work and reflection on the French horn, an instrument belonging to the family of bronzes, which brings together a wide number of performers throughout the country, with different technical levels and musical experiences.

The manager of the initiative is Paulo Muñoz Toledo, horn soloist and member of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, who has developed his musical career both in Chile and abroad. In 2012 he presented a project to the National Council for Culture and the Arts, awarding himself a fund for the execution of the first meeting, which took place at the Fundación de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile.

The project will have the participation of prominent teachers, who will be in charge of teaching the classes, including: Ignacio García, horn professor at the Musikhochschule in Rostock and first horn at the Berlin State Opera, Alejandro Meléndez, professor of as from the University of La Serena and the Jorge Peña Hen Experimental School of Music; Nigel Downing, professor of horn at the Hochschule der Künste Zürich and member of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra; and Paulo Muñoz, project manager, horn soloist and member of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra.

The Meeting has the support of the CNCA, the Foundation of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Chile, the University of La Serena and Gebr. Alexander, firm in charge of the design and manufacture of French horns.

The rapporteur also explained what are the main mistakes that are made when looking for a job. 

“Guidances from psychology to face the world of work” was titled entertaining, but above all, important talk given by academic Mg. Carlos Díaz Lastreto, belonging to the Department of Psychology at the University of La Serena, who in about an hour interacted with the attendees about how to present himself correctly in a job interview and what are the main weaknesses that he has detected with his experience as a psychologist and in personnel selection interviews. 

According to the professional, it is advisable to present yourself as a solution to the employer's problems, offering the potential of the knowledge and skills previously acquired as a contribution to the new job, rather than showing yourself in desperation to find a job. 

“From the perspective of what my competencies, capabilities and abilities are, and showing in a job interview that I can be an offer to solve problems for an employer (…) presenting myself as the solution to problems, rather than someone who comes humbly to ask for a job, it is a positioning that generates greater success in that activity,” said Díaz. 

The academic also addressed a series of topics that are not covered in the classroom, but that are necessary when entering work life, such as, for example, appearing for a selection process, what to show about one's abilities or skills, and what discard of them. All this is framed in the need for young professionals to address these topics in their formal education, as a way to support them in their labor inclusion. 

“The most traditional vocational training focuses strongly on professional skills and does not make much mention or much training of the skills necessary to look for a job, to perform in interviews, and to expand on the skills when going to a job interview and This can be an interesting instance to begin to visualize that and begin to pay more attention to it,” he expressed.

Regarding this topic, Andrés Castillo, attending the activity, highlighted the holding of this conference, especially for “young people who are just starting out in working life, for example, and who are eager; They should never run out of taking advantage of this type of opportunities that are offered to them, it is very important for comprehensive training because the professional is not only an expert in what he knows, but he also has to know about life and learn from many things. 

This activity belongs to cycle of academic conferences “Psychology and contemporary society”, organized by the Directorate of Extension and the Department of Psychology of the University of La Serena, which each month presents a conference on relevant topics for the community, in a familiar and simple language, for all types of audiences.

The ULS academic will also include a work of his own creation.

As part of the 2014 concert series of the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena, the institution's academic, Francisco Vergara, will perform in a solo concert performed on classical guitar. The activity will take place this Thursday, October 2, at 19:00 p.m., in the ULS Exhibition Hall (Benavente 950), with free entry. 

This passionate about music and guitar, has been teaching for 13 years in the Music Department of the university, giving the best of his knowledge to students who are preparing to continue along the musical path. However, the professional looks for spaces to dedicate time to his passion and give the community all his talent as a guitarist.

Thus, for all those who love this instrument, Vergara will perform a classical guitar concert that will show all the talent of this artist with a guideline that he himself detailed. “I will cover the guitar repertoire from the Renaissance period, with the authors who were dedicated to the guitar or the vihuela of the time, and go through a little bit of the music of the European repertoire and also reaching the most popular Latin American repertoire, which is not so popular, but they are pieces that are based on genres or styles of popular music with folk roots, among those I included a piece of mine, which has a little bit of fusion with flamenco,” he stated. 

Regarding the program, the academic and musician announced that “the repertoire starts with pieces from the Renaissance, which are pieces specially written for vihuela, which is a predecessor of the guitar, and I am going to go through Bach, for the Classical period, I am going to "Going to a more modern period of music, I'm talking about European music, and after getting to modern I'm going to move on to South America." The activity includes a theoretical talk and four practical workshops for those interested. 

At the University of La Serena, two activities will be carried out, organized by the Extension Department and the Kinesiology program, aimed at people who suffer from disorders in maintaining balance, difficulties in performing simple activities such as standing for a long time or who feel the imminent risk of falls in your daily life.

The first of them will take place next Monday, September 29, at 17:00 p.m., in the ULS Exhibition Hall, where the Mg. Edwin Contreras Acevedo, an academic in Kinesiology, will give the conference: “Strategies for the risk of falls in the elderly.” The activity will deliver, in about an hour, a theoretical part of the topic, where complex information will be delivered in a simple and understandable way for the community. People will be able to interact with the kinesiologist, make the corresponding consultations, and even for those who are very interested in learning these strategies, they will have the opportunity to enroll in a four-session workshop, which will include an evaluation with specialized equipment for movement analysis in the career laboratories. 

“We are going to do an initial evaluation, which is going to be our first workshop, then we are going to do 2 workshops, work, exercises, dynamics related to training, with reinforcing certain capacities that our being has to be able to maintain balance, and in In the fourth workshop we are going to carry out a reevaluation very similar to the first to demonstrate the changes that are generated with a two-session training, so that they can continue carrying out this type of activities, so that they prolong their functional capacity, that capacity that they require. day by day to do their simple activities,” said academic Contreras.

This workshop will be held on September 30, October 2, 7 and 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. and has a one-time value of $5.000 per registration. The idea is to train them by virtue of the disturbances, that is, to generate instances that complicate them, but without risk, in a dynamic therapeutic environment in which the population can educate themselves and then do it autonomously," highlighted the kinesiologist who emphasized that The objective is to give tools to students.

The professional also gave recommendations and useful advice for the prevention of cavities.

An informative lecture, which taught about the importance and care of milk teeth, and their multiple functions in the mouth, was given by Paula Arriagada, a professor of Dentistry at the University of La Serena, as part of the cycle of talks that seeks to provide the community with relevant information about oral health care. 

The academic, in charge of reporting the second activity of the cycle, addressed the issue of tooth decay as a completely preventable disease, which depends on eating habits and hygiene, among other factors. In addition, the professional stressed that adequate hygiene must be maintained and habits created from an early age. 

To do this, he gave some recommendations regarding oral hygiene in minors. “It is important to brush your children's teeth after each meal, especially at night before going to bed; brushing should begin from the moment the first tooth appears, using only a brush and water; from the age of 3, children can start brushing their teeth with children's toothpaste (with fluoride) and if toothpaste is not available, they should continue brushing with a toothbrush and water; and up to the age of 6, parents should brush their children's teeth when they are at home, especially before going to bed, ”she emphasized. 

The academic also gave a long list on the importance of milk teeth, including: chewing, correct phono-articulation or pronunciation, stimulation of maxillary bone growth, maintenance of space in the bone for eruption of the permanent teeth, guide for the eruption and, of course, aesthetics and self-esteem. 

Finally, the pediatric dentist answered questions and queries from the audience, where she also provided some information about the sometimes unknown benefits granted by the Government of Chile in its "Comprehensive oral health for 6-year-old boys and girls" program. specifying, for example, that the sealants are recommended for the first permanent molars, and that they are incorporated as an AUGE guarantee, as long as the boys and girls are 6 years old. 

This activity is organized by the Dentistry career and the ULS Extension Department, in its purpose of bringing academic work closer to the community.

A large number of students and teachers from the Altazor School witnessed this pedagogical comedy, performed by the Theater Cast of the ULS Extension Directorate. 

A large call presented “Mathematical Cubed Stories”, a play composed of three mini stories that playfully recreate different mathematical problems, through which young and old alike become enchanted and re-enchanted by the magic of numbers and their solutions. This first activity is the beginning of a tour that will carry out the work through interested schools in the region, and on this occasion it visited the Altazor School in La Serena. 

Nearly 400 students and teachers from different subjects witnessed the performance and marveled at this entertaining way of teaching through the performing arts. “An excellent presentation, which kept the students very interested in what they were doing, and with a very interesting topic, which manages to entertain, which is often difficult. It manages to entertain and ensure that the students understand and apply what they have been working on,” said Andrés Barraza, school coordinator.

On the other hand, in addition to the contribution in terms of entertainment, Barraza highlighted other important points regarding this presentation. “It is a positive contribution in several areas of our school, which has to do with the educational project, where we try to train our students with a vision from academics, but also personal development and artistic appreciation, which many times in the classes themselves or in the development of activities during the year are left aside, so any instance that has to do with artistic appreciation, with learning and appreciation of the arts, for us is extremely important,” he emphasized. 

This pedagogical comedy is performed by the Theater Cast of the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena (ÉTÉULS), which, in a playful way and in a familiar and colloquial language, gives students simple teachings about mathematics with the objective of encouraging through representations and exercises in logic, arithmetic, geometry and algebra.
