With the stories ''In networks with Polígona'', ''Zero Stress'' and ''The Death of Eight'', the public was surprised to learn, with touches of humor and mischief, the importance they have in everyday life mathematics and numbers. This work, as a whole, represents a new way of approaching the teaching of mathematics, since in addition to presenting it in an entertaining way for the public, it represents a source of new ideas so that teachers can carry out their classes in the classroom. 

That is why the free event was attended by enthusiastic teachers who, during a forum held at the end of the presentation, were grateful for the opportunity to attend and learn about a different way to re-enchant their students with these contents.

The play, written and directed by Dr. Catalina Cvitanic, had the special collaboration of guest director Ignacio Cáceres, who has worked for months, perfecting the staging and performance of each of the performers, thus bringing the culture and art.

Those in charge of embodying these characters were, like ''Polígona'' Catalina Cvitanic, ''Doña Úrsula'' Lilian Cruz and ''Luna'' Pía Ahumada.

The second was ''Zero Stress'', a very fast and humorous story, which narrates the hardships of Zero, a number that decides to face its fears and try to explain its anxieties and fears to its Psychiatrist. In this play, Daniel Aguayo Salfate acted as the zero, and Rodrigo Garrido, as the psychiatrist, who were applauded by the audience.

Finally, viewers learned the questions of a researcher regarding the disappearance of the ''eight'' and what would happen in everyday life if a number did not exist.

''Emotions and well-being: is it possible to manage emotions for our benefit?'' is the name of the first talk organized by the Directorate of Extension and the Department of Psychology of the University of La Serena within the framework of the Cycle of Academic Conferences 2014 ''Psychology and Contemporary Society'', which will be held throughout the year, starting on April 30 and ending November 26.

This first conference will be given by the director of the Department of Psychology at the ULS, Dr. Mauricio González Arias, and the objective is to present some elements of self-regulation and emotional management that emerge from the new theories of emotions and that can serve attendees to better understand their emotional life. The talk will take place on Wednesday, April 30, from 11:30 a.m., at the ULS Extension Center, located at Prat 446, La Serena.

The objective of this cycle of conferences is to achieve a rapprochement between the Department of Psychology and the community through talks given by academics from the University of La Serena, where their research topics will be presented in a way that can be understood by the audience. without it being necessary to have a prior mastery of psychology and at the same time that the topics covered are useful.

In general, among the topics addressed within the cycle are happiness, cognitive psychology, myths about human sexuality, guidelines for the world of work and quality of life.

This is the third version of a work that has meant a great academic contribution by the Department of Psychology in generating instances of participation oriented toward the local population, with the idea of ​​enhancing the role played by this unit of the Faculty of Humanities in the training of professionals in the area of ​​psychology.

The Pedagogy degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of La Serena inaugurated the academic year with the conference: "Childhood education: learning, development and brain plasticity" by psychomotor specialist, neuroscience specialist Dr. © Jorge Hirsch, director of the Institute of Neurorehabilitation of San Juan, Argentina. Professor Hirsch has been a visiting professor at various universities in Latin America and stands out for his studies in neuroscience and neurorehabilitation of children and young people as various pathologies that inhibit their development.

A night of emotions was experienced in the concert dedicated to the XXXIII anniversary of the University of La Serena, offered by the ULS Symphony Orchestra, thanks to the talent of the professional cast and the soloist Víctor Araya Altamirano.

The event was attended by ULS authorities, special guests and the general public who came to the Municipal Theater of La Serena to enjoy once again the exceptional presentation that is part of the 2014 season.

This concert had the special participation of the Dutch director Marnix Willem Steffen, who narrated part of his experience that marked his debut in our country. ''If you are a guest director, something happens like a meeting between two people, a relationship. The conductor comes to work with the orchestra, help them play better and also give a good interpretation of the work they do. It is not known how the relationship will end before the concert. In this case it has been very good, the orchestra has acquired a very good style of playing, that is very good, we have incorporated details. From March 17 to April 04, applications will be open for the ''Gerontological Caregivers'' Course, organized by the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena in conjunction with the Nursing Department of this university. superiors. This is the fifth version where the Mg. Carmen Retamal Valenzuela will teach this course, which includes important aspects to take into consideration for the care of the elderly. 

For the academic of the Department. of ULS Nursing, coordinator of the course, the idea is that the participants are suitable people who ''have a real sensitivity in working with older people. "We need people who feel special affection and esteem for older adults." The professional also specified that gerontological caregivers "are caregivers who are prepared to work with both older adults who are dismobilized and those who need some care or are partially dependent," she commented. 

This course is made up of 7 modules dedicated to the different care that should be taken towards older adults in areas such as psychology, physical, social and spiritual development, among others. The duration is 60 chronological hours distributed between theoretical and practical classes between the months of April and until August. The theoretical classes will be held at the Extension Center (Calle Prat N°446, La Serena), while the practical classes will be taught in the laboratories of the Nursing Department (Matta N°147, Coquimbo).

The speaker has had vast experience with the topic, as she is a nurse, has a degree in gerontology, a master's degree in applied social gerontology, an academic in the Department of Nursing at the University of La Serena, and has carried out community work with older adults since 1998. the date. This course has a special dedication on the part of the Retamal academic since its objective is to achieve a society of healthy older adults, who age in a dignified manner and who retain their self-worth permanently, constituting a contribution to reducing levels of dependency in the country.

Among the specific objectives pursued by this body are: knowing the global, national and regional demographic reality in relation to the older adult population; understand the importance of the ethical aspects surrounding the care of the elderly and recognize the different types of abuse towards this group; differentiate the changes that are generated with aging in a biopsychosocial dimension; identify main basic needs that are deteriorated in an elderly person, whether dependent or self-sufficient; and develop initial skills in the management of basic nursing techniques and procedures, which help the elderly to live this stage of life with dignity.

The value of the course is $35.000 (cash payment) and $38.000 (in two documented installments for individuals).
