“Myths and truths of genetic modification in plants, from classical genetics to CRISPR/Cas9” is the title of the last conference of the “Science and Technology” cycle of the Raúl Bitrán Nachary Chair, organized by the Directorate of Liaison with the Environment and Extension from the University of La Serena. The invitation is for next Wednesday, November 29, at 11:30 a.m., in the Aula Magna of the house of higher education (Benavente 980, La Serena).

Plant biotechnology and genetic modification has been around for much longer than we think. The Mayans made artificial selection in corn and the Yagans were biotechnologists when using sphagnum to heal wounds or maintain whale meat. With the advancement of technology it was possible to go further, incorporating genes from certain species into others, to obtain characteristics that were not possible naturally, which opened an unexplored world, with good and bad results. In this talk, we will hear the complete story, the contributions and bad experiences and a projection of the current trend of researchers, responsible science.

The activity will feature the guest speaker, Dr. Juan Pablo Matte Risopatron, associate researcher (PAI N°82140040) of the Dept. of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and will be moderated by Dr. Cristian Ibáñez Gutiérrez, associate professor of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of La Serena.

This conference will be broadcast via streaming on reuna.cl and on the Facebook page of the ULS Extension Center.
