New students participate in the Induction program of the University of La Serena

The first-year students have been able to share with directors and teachers, get to know various university campuses and the courses offered on each campus, along with learning about the various procedures that a regular student must face, their rights and duties, and the services and benefits that the study house offers them.

This Monday, March 9, the Orientation to University Life program for first-year students began at the University of La Serena, which will extend until Friday the 13th of this month and whose purpose is to ensure the integration of new students into the university and social life of the institution.

According to what was stated by the Director of Teaching, Mg. Laura Vega, this program seeks to induce a sense of belonging and identification with the University of La Serena; determine the profile of students entering the institution, through diagnostic tests; detect those young people who arrive academically disadvantaged, both in disciplinary content and in attitude towards studying (Mathematical diagnostic tests, Reading Comprehension, Autonomous Learning); and publicize the different units that support academic activity, including the Central Library, the General Directorate of Student Affairs, the Teaching Directorate, the Learning Support Center, among others.

In turn, at the receptions of the respective Schools, extensive information is provided about the student's career, study plan, role of the professional, graduation profile and work environment. It also focuses on the structure and function of the different units of the University, with emphasis on School Management; The current Study Regime Regulation is announced; instances of socialization and accompaniment among peers are generated; and study habits and healthy lifestyles are promoted in university students.

induction 2This is how the new students of the 40 careers, assigned to the faculties of Sciences, Cs. Social and Economic, Humanities and Engineering, they shared during these days with authorities, school directors, academics and students of higher courses. In addition, the young people learned about the various university campuses and the careers taught on each campus, along with taking the diagnostic tests and learning about the Moodle platform, the various procedures that a regular student must face, their rights and duties, and the services, benefits and extracurricular activities offered by the school.

As part of this program, the Induction to the Central Library of the University of La Serena was also carried out, the purpose of which is for new students to be able to know the location and hours of service, know the service protocol, identify the loan types and times, use electronic resources, request other services or bibliographic resources and know the library catalog.

Likewise, during the receptions organized by each of the majors, the greeting of the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, was displayed, who gave a cordial welcome to the new students. “This institution has managed to position itself in a place of excellence in the regional and national context, thanks to the effort and work of managers, academics and of course its students, who with dedication and perseverance are achieving important goals year after year. You are beginning an intense academic year, which is why I want to give everyone an affectionate greeting, with the desire to continue growing together and facing the challenges that lie ahead. We will accompany you on that path.”

It should be noted that according to the 2015 Academic Calendar, classes for the First Semester begin this Monday, March 16.
