The event expects the attendance of about 600 participants and will have as guest speakers prominent researchers from universities in the USA, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Netherlands.

“Is Bose Einstein condensation of trapped gases a phase transition?” (Is the Bose Einstein condensation of confined gases a phase transition?), is the work that Dr. Marco Corgini Videla, academic and director of the Department of Mathematics at the University of La Serena, will present at the 15th Congress of Logic , Methodology and Philosophy of Science (CLMPS 2015), which will be held at the University of Helsinki (Finland).

The CLMPS (www.helsinki.fi/clmps) is one of the most important activities of the Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science (DLMPS) of the International Union for History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS). Its first edition was held at Stanford University (California, USA) in 1960, and has been replicated every four years since then, with headquarters in important capitals and study centers: Jerusalem (Israel), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Bucharest (Romania), London (Canada), Hannover (German Federal Rep.), Salzburg (Austria), Moscow (Soviet Union), Uppsala (Sweden), Florence (Italy), Krakow (Poland), Oviedo (Spain), Beijing ( China) and Nancy (France).

“In this talk, I will briefly discuss some attempts to reconcile the general theory of phase transitions with current experiments on bosonic condensation in the case of systems of atoms confined in a finite region of space, at very low temperatures. I will include the analysis of recent criticisms, the possible consequences on the principles that found the general theory and alternative approaches,” explained the ULS academic.

The conference will take place from August 3 to 8 and has 17 sections: Logic, Mathematical Logic, Philosophical Logic, Computational Logic and Applications of Logic, and Historical Aspects of Logic. Also General Philosophy of Science, Methodology, Formal Philosophy of Science and Formal Epistemology, Metaphysical Issues in the Philosophy of Science, Ethical and Political Issues in the Philosophy of Science and Historical Aspects in the Philosophy of Science. Finally, Philosophical Issues of Particular Disciplines, Philosophy of Formal Sciences (logic, mathematics, statistics and computer sciences), Philosophy of the Philosophy of Sciences (physics, chemistry, earth sciences and climate sciences), Philosophy of Life Sciences, Philosophy of Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences, Philosophy of Humanities and Social Sciences, Philosophy of Applied Sciences and Technology, Philosophy of Medicine and Metaphilosophy.

About 600 participants are expected to attend, including exhibitors and students. In addition, the program includes six invited lectures, which will be given by renowned researchers. These are Rachel Ankeny (University of Adelaide, Australia), Steve Awodey (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA), Patricia Blanchette (University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA), Harold Kincaid (University of Cape Town, South Africa), Eleanor Knox (King's College, London, United Kingdom) and Johan van Benthem (University of Amsterdam and Stanford University, Netherlands and USA).

CLMPS 2015 is sponsored by the University of Helsinki and the Federation of Scientific Societies of Finland. Furthermore, the event is organized jointly and in cooperation with the European Summer Meeting of the Association for Symbolic Logic, Logic Colloquium 2015.
