Students will represent the region in the 2018 National Physics Olympics

At the regional level, the Olympics are organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of La Serena and the Alumni Center for Pedagogy in Mathematics and Physics.

Five high school students will represent the Coquimbo Region in the upcoming 2018 National Physics Olympics, which have become one of the main activities promoted by the Chilean Physics Society with the aim of contributing to the development of Physics in the country. .

physics olympics a2These are the students Francisco Galeno Rojas, from the Andrés Bello School; Constanza Valenzuela Neira, from the San Joaquín School; Marija Westfall Gardner, from the Scuola Italiana; Nicolás García Moreno, from the San Joaquín School, and Jean Touret Hidalgo, from the Alemán School, who were selected after participating in the second stage of the Regional Physics Olympiads, organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of La Serena and the Alumni Center of the Pedagogy in Mathematics and Physics career.

The award ceremony for the regional version took place last Friday, October 26, at the ULS facilities, with the presence of the selected students (5 from each level), parents and guardians, directors and UTP heads of their schools. and special guests.

In this 2018 version, the first stage took place on Saturday, September 1 at the offices of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the state campus
and at the Amalia Errazuriz School in the city of Ovalle, who for the third consecutive year has provided its facilities for the event, where the participants from the Province of Limarí went. The selection of the students was carried out by taking a theoretical test for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade levels of the region.

Subsequently, on Saturday, October 6, a second theoretical test was administered to the young finalists of 2nd grade, and an experimental test was administered to the finalist students of 3rd and 4th grade.

physics olympics a3The number of participants in this version reached a total of 228 students, belonging to 15 establishments in La Serena, Ovalle and Combarbalá.

Chilean Physics Olympiad

This Olympiad has been held in Chile for more than two decades and has counted on the efforts of countless members of the Chilean academic community, throughout the country. It is carried out every year thanks to the sustained support of universities and research centers.

The objectives of this activity are to generate a space for participation for all the students of our region, from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade levels; foster interest in Physics and promote its study; and select the delegation of students from the different communes that will represent the region in the National Olympics.
