Press release: Webinar “Reflections on Public Higher Education” by CUECH

Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 30, the Consortium of State Universities of Chile will hold the event: “Reflections on Public Higher Education”, which will address the past, present and future of public higher education and the role that universities should have in the new Constitution.

In this instance, the document “State Universities and the New Constitution” will be presented, a proposal made by the rectors of public higher education institutions.

The document contains a look at the change to the higher education system since 1980, when the military dictatorship broke the central axis of state universities nationwide, after separating the headquarters of the University of Chile and the then State Technical University, (today the University of Santiago de Chile) and transform its headquarters into regional universities, which imposed the progressive reduction of resources delivered directly to the state universities and a progressive abandonment of these.

It is in this context that the webinar “Reflections on Public Higher Education” will be held next Wednesday, June 30 at 10:00, with a presentation by the Rector of the University of Chile and president of the Consortium of State Universities, Dr. Ennio Vivaldi Véjar.

In addition, subsequent comments will be made by Diamela Eltit, 2018 National Literature Prize winner; José Maza, astronomer and national prize for Exact Sciences 1999 and the poet and national prize for Literature 2020, Elicura Chihuailaf.

Once the presentation is over, a press point will be held via zoom starting at 12:30 p.m.
