USerena hosted the first meeting of Regional Inclusive Practices

The instance considered various presentations and the delivery of certificates of participation in the 2023 Chilean Sign Language Course.

More than 130 people participated in the First Meeting of Regional Inclusive Practices, held at the University of La Serena, where different initiatives were announced and the importance of public and private institutions working collaboratively on this matter was highlighted.

The Rector, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, highlighted that “as the University of La Serena we have wanted not only to integrate, but to exchange knowledge that allows us to develop solid collaborative and effective support networks to provide solutions that break down barriers, to be able to provide equal opportunities to students at different educational levels and encourage the participation of all.”

On the occasion, certificates of participation in the 2023 Chilean Sign Language Course were delivered, carried out by 68 members of the university community, who were able to take the first or second level according to their previous knowledge.

The FACSEJ academic, Orlando Robles, considered that the opportunity to take a signing course “was important because it helps us connect as a community with the needs that may arise in a society. In the case of having a student who requires the use of sign language, we can be prepared to make the time at university much more bearable. Having these instances available and that the community is participating is a very good sign.”

On the other hand, the official of the Department of Welfare, Patricia Campaña, pointed out that "having taken this course has meant an opportunity in which the University of La Serena provides the knowledge so that from the official perspective we can contribute to the strengthening of a more inclusive.”

Finally, Daniela Rojas, a graduate of the institution's Architecture degree, stated that “what I learned allows me to communicate in a different way, to feel in a different way, with deaf people, and it also allows me to understand many situations that these people have experienced. It is necessary to recognize the progress they have made in moving forward and managing to insert themselves into society.”

During the activity, the person in charge of the Coquimbo Inclusive Higher Education Network, Tatiana López, presented the topic “REDESIC, the importance of networking.” In the second instance, the Illustrious Municipality of La Serena presented the presentation “Good Practices of the Inclusive Development Department”, by the Rehabilitation Coordinator of the Inclusive Department”, José Escobar Varas.

Then, the Director of the SIRAM Company, Pedro Alvarado, developed the topic “Valuation of Electronic Waste through Inclusion, Art and Recycling”. And to end the day, the Coordinator of AGDDFI-ULS, Mg. Cristian Blanco, referred to the “Advances and challenges in matters of Inclusion at the University of La Serena.
