ULS English Area organizes training for teachers in teaching methodology

English course

The program taught by Dr. in Linguistics from the University of North Carolina, Jillian Haeseler, is free of charge and will be replicated with teachers from the city of Ovalle.

An important group of English teachers from the Coquimbo Region will participate between the months of September and November 2014 in an important improvement program, aimed at improving the teaching methodology in the four basic skills of the language.

The initiative, developed by the University of La Serena, through the English Area of the Department of Arts and Letters, arose thanks to the support of the Fulbright Commission, which will certify those who obtain 80% attendance in the courses.

The program, which is structured as nine workshops and is free of charge, will be taught by Dr. in Linguistics from the University of North Carolina, Jillian Haeseler, an academic with an extensive curriculum, who in her first presentation before the Participants indicated that they felt very happy to be part of this activity. “What excites me most about the program is that I will be able to dedicate myself to research, because in the United States I cannot do it since I have to teach administration work and that does not leave me time; However, here I will have to concentrate on what I have to present,” she explained.

Regarding the main challenge of working at the ULS, Dr. Haeseler emphasized that “the most important thing that I am going to do at the ULS will be this series of nine workshops that have been organized, where we are going to study the four learning skills of a language, which are: speaking, writing, reading, listening and understanding. In addition, there will be the challenge of what it means to be a teacher of a language when one is not a native speaker of it. We will also work with school teachers and we will repeat this workshop in Ovalle (…). “I am very happy because I notice that there is a thirst to learn.”

Within the framework of the first module, the program coordinator and ULS academic, Mg. Julio Parada explained that “for us, having Professor Haeseler is very important because we were one of the eight universities selected this semester by the Fulbright Commission to send us a high-level professor, such as visiting professors, which means that we are doing things well.”

The academic from the English Area added that “basic and middle school teachers are subjected to exams and demonstrate the achievement of objectives and goals, so they will be able to add, thanks to this initiative, a high-level course in English methodology, and That is extremely satisfying. Likewise, our students will also be able to bond with this teacher which will be very satisfactory for them within the framework of their high-level learning,” he emphasized.
