Lecture series of the Department of Psychology calls for conversations about sexual diversity

“The invitation is to learn basic concepts that will help us build a world in which all people can live better,” highlighted the speaker, Mg. Natalia Guerrero.

A new activity in the “Psychology and Contemporary Society” cycle will take place next Wednesday, July 25, at 11:30 a.m., at the Cuatro Esquinas Community and Cultural Center. “Sexually Diverse: Concept Update” will be taught by Natalia Guerrero Fernández, psychologist, Master in Family and Community Mediation, clinical sexologist and academic from the Department of Psychology at the University of La Serena.

This cycle, organized by the Department of Psychology in conjunction with the Directorate of Liaison with the Environment and Extension of the ULS, will address sexuality as the dimension of human development that accompanies us from the womb to death and that is influenced by factors biological, psychological, political, cultural, ethical, spiritual, among others.

As commented by the rapporteur, even though historically the differences in relation to sexuality have been studied (the female and male sexual response; changes in sexuality during the life cycle; the differences between being heterosexual, homosexual, lesbian, trans, intersexual, among others) today there are theoretical updates that revolutionize the way in which, until now, this topic has been understood.

In this regard, Mg. Natalia Guerrero commented that “the first thing we are going to do on this occasion is to clarify these basic concepts, what is meant by gender, by biological sex, what is meant by sexual orientation, what is gender identity, what is being trans, what it is to be cisgender, what it is to be gay, what it is to be lesbian as basic concepts, but to later leave them completely in the background to concentrate on the importance of finally respecting each other in our diversity in order to build a more participatory and more democratic.”

On the other hand, the sexologist referred to the cycle in general, which deals with various contingent topics in conferences aimed at the entire community. “I find it very useful to share, in a free, open and simplified way, information that can allow everyone to take a point of view, but already informed. If the people who go want to dialogue, also to discuss in a constructive way, it is an ideal space for that. The intention with this is not to go and present some slides and speak only myself, but rather it is more of a blackboard and marker and to go in a more collective way, to build some collective opinions and then to complement them with some information.”

This activity will take place at the Cuatro Esquinas Community and Cultural Center, located at Larraín 3505, La Serena, thanks to an alliance between the organizers and this busy municipal space.
