For two days, more than a thousand basic and secondary education students from educational establishments belonging to the Gabriel González Videla Corporation, changed traditional music classes for didactic educational concerts, where they were able to learn about and expand their knowledge on the subject together with the Symphony Orchestra. University of La Serena.

The cycle of presentations was conducted by the prestigious American conductor David Händel, widely known for his passionate musical leadership and abilities to energize both orchestras and audiences, which, on this occasion, was widely demonstrated to the young people and teachers of the educational venues.

The 7th grade student of this last school, José Miguel Urtubia, said he was happy with this musical intervention: “I think it is very good that the orchestra has come to my school again with new repertoire, I really liked the last two works they played , 'Escape and Mystery' by Astor Piazzola and 'The Happy Slaves' by Juan Arriaga. The truth is that I really enjoy music, it gives me tranquility and peace and that is what I like the most.”

For Iremel Torrejón, a 1st grade student at the same high school, enjoying the music of the symphonic ensemble is very important: “I try to go to the theater once or twice a month, and now I had the opportunity to see the orchestra at my own school and That seems great to me, it is an activity that one does not expect during class time. It is very enriching to be a participant in these concerts, I leave happy and with a very rich feeling of having learned about what a musical fugue is, of having seen great musicians and admiring the coordination and concentration they have when playing, that fascinated me. I hope in the future to welcome them back to my school and that they can do a much more extensive class, because one is very pleased after a while. “We really enjoy the music and listening to the orchestra.”

educational concert3For his part, for Aron Blanchart, a third-year student at the Gabriela Mistral High School, the concert “was quite pleasant, it was harmonious and the orchestra played a little bit of everything. The director, despite being North American, had very good Spanish and that allowed us to understand him much better; Furthermore, it is clear that he is a powerful teacher, I paid close attention to how he guided the orchestra and that caught my attention."

It should be noted that these musical events are free of charge and respond to the important musical, cultural and educational work of the University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra. On this occasion, the series of educational concerts had the collaboration of the La Serena Regional Symphony Orchestra Foundation, the Gabriel González Videla Corporation and the valuable sponsorship of the United States Embassy in Chile.
