As a way to strengthen pedagogical/digital skills, in addition to sharing and reflecting on a new way of teaching and learning, the Pedagogy in English degree program, attached to the Faculty of Humanities, has prepared two remote meetings.

These days have been organized for English teachers from different educational establishments, guide teachers, students of the professional practice program and ULS academics.

In the first session, held on June 4, the central topic was called Strengthening pedagogical and digital skills in remote mode. On the occasion, the exhibitions “The role of teachers in school coexistence” by academic Jilberto Olivares were presented; Later, Professor Claudia Boniche presented “Penny Ur's 30 teaching tips”; Subsequently, the teacher from the Gerónimo Rendic school, Fernando Castro, shared the presentation “How to create animated videos for your English lessons”

For the second meeting on Friday, June 11, called Experiences and reflections on new ways of teaching and learning in remote mode, the program considers “Experiences of professional practice in remote mode” by the speakers Sofía Araya and Gabriela González, professors of English, ULS graduates in 2020 and “My experience as a remote teacher guide” taught by the English teacher at the Leonardo Da Vinci school, Pamela Ugalde.

The days will culminate with a plenary session for questions and reflections moderated by the academic and coordinator of the degree, Marian Neira.

It is worth highlighting the excellent reception that this initiative has had, which allows us to strengthen ties and exchange experiences from the perspective of the guiding teachers and the students in practice.

The FIULS, through the Technology-Based Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Axis of the FIULS 2030, is developing a management system that will facilitate actions associated with the improvement plans of each of the degrees of the Faculty of Engineering.

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of La Serena developed a workshop with the objective of generating new strategies for 2022 enrollment, and at the same time improving plans for the development of the self-evaluation process. The initiative had the participation of professionals from the PACE ULS Program, Department Directors, School Directors of Engineering Careers and academics from the Faculty of Engineering.

At the beginning of the workshop, the profile of students entering the Faculty of Engineering was analyzed, through indicators generated in admission, and effective enrollment, in relation to places and FIULS income scores. “In this sense, this information was complemented with the diagnostic tests that are carried out on students when they enter the University and the results of all the courses assigned to the FIULS were shown. Finally we realized that the students bring deficiencies in the content,” stressed Francisco Rubina, Academic of the Department of Mining Engineering and professional at FIULS.

Loreto Garrido, Academic Manager of PACE ULS Tutors, and Eduardo Campos, Coordinator of PACE ULS Student Monitoring and Follow-up, participated in the event, who announced the 2020 results of the accompaniment programs.

Subsequently, a new format for improvement plans was discussed that will be developed in the self-evaluation process, which includes new institutional criteria. “We want to do more transparent and expeditious work, specifically in the commitments made that allow us to overcome the weaknesses of the courses. The idea of the workshop was to address the issue of improvement plans, for the planning of new activities and execution of these actions,” Rubina indicated.

In addition, it was agreed to establish working committees for the development of various initiatives that range from the promotion of engineering majors in schools to the carrying out of activities such as a webinar, which will allow enrollment to increase next year.

Management system

The Professional of the Technology Commercialization and Technology-Based Entrepreneurship Axis of the FIULS 2030 Project, Ricardo Campos, regarding the creation of a Management System for the Faculty of Engineering indicated that “This system will allow School Directors and Career Coordinators enter in a standardized way the actions associated with the improvement plans of each of the careers, thus allowing for backup and access to information online.”

The solar car is preparing for the next solar car competition that will tour the Australian desert in 2023, in which it is expected to obtain one of the first five places in the world.

With the aim of optimizing the times in the design and modeling of the new prototype of the Solar Car and to have greater precision in the validation of the computational data, the Antakari team, made up of students, teachers and Minera los Pelambres, is working with the “SynergyGrid” server, which is available to the Faculty of Engineering for simulation of numerical methods and the development of research carried out by students and academics of the University.

Samuel Campaña, Student of the Mechanical Civil Engineering Degree at the University of La Serena and member of the Antakari Team, pointed out that “FIULS provided us with a server to use from our homes, to reduce processing times and validate the data in a period very short. This is very important because the designs we make are not always correct, this is why we constantly make improvements and without the server doing a simulation would take approximately two days and with SynergyGrid it would only take a few hours; and at the same time we can see three modeling options. “This program has a track record of data accuracy.”

Pedro Galindo, Graduate of the Mechanical Civil Engineering Degree at the University of La Serena and member of the Antakari Team, indicated that “we thank the FIULS 2030 Project for providing us with this powerful calculation server, its operation is fast, accurate and by 2023 in our participation in Australia we will have a more efficient car, since we are improving this new version of Intikallpa and it is for this reason that we hope to have better performance in the race and be among the top five places in the world.”

Thanks to the use of the server, the approximate reduction in work time is greater than 50%, which accelerates the analysis process of more complex and exact aerodynamic designs, which are required for the validation of this scientific method that is used in the processes.

Workshop No. 1, corresponding to What is the PACE Program?, had as its main objective to deliver and present in a general way its operation, the support it provides to students, parents and the educational community and, in addition, to mention information about the processes to apply for scholarships and higher education financing benefits, so that the fathers and mothers themselves can support and guide their sons and daughters in this regard.

The first phase of talks began on May 12 with the Pedro Pablo Muñoz School in La Higuera, continued on May 13 with the Nicolás Federico Lohse Vargas High School in Los Vilos, the Raúl Silva Henríquez High School in Ovalle on May 19, the Liceo Estela Ávila Molina de Ovalle on May 20 and finally finished on June 3 with the Liceo Gabriela Mistral de La Serena. However, there are still establishments that, due to connectivity problems, must reschedule dates.

Now, although these talks were focused on parents of 3rd and 4th grades, parents of 1st and 2nd grades of the Estela Ávila High School also participated, at the request of the establishment.

In this regard, Dennis Marín, PEM PACE ULS Executing Professional, explained the importance that parents, from the beginning of secondary education, know and talk about the post-secondary career of their students, in order to learn about scholarships and benefits: “the The idea is to involve the parents as much as possible, since in general these conversations arise when they are already in the 4th grade and a different pressure is already coming.

Likewise, he pointed out that the participation of parents in these workshops is essential, so that they know the activities that the program is carrying out and also: “so that they manage the topics that we work on in the workshops with the boys and girls, in general it is It is essential to involve them since they often end up being the ones who most influence the students' decisions."

In turn, Gloria Rojas, representative of the Estela Ávila Molina High School, stated: “it is very practical for us that the talks are online due to work time and also to have more information, and to be clear about the topics from the 1st grade to reinforce to the children and help them in their studies and reinforce the path towards what they want to be professionally, I really liked this talk.”
