The activities were part of the program for the XXXVII anniversary of the ULS.

With a busy ceremony, which was attended by regional and internal authorities of the University of La Serena, the School of Journalism of the institution inaugurated the exhibition “Visual Rhetoric”, an exhibition that exhibits works that the students have done in the classroom in the subject of Photography I and II. On the occasion, the second version of the book “Streets and Characters: Cultural Heritage of La Serena” was also launched, a publication that seeks to publicize local, national and foreign historical figures through journalistic chronicles, whose names correspond to streets. from La Serena.

Regarding the launch, the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés highlighted: “I believe that once again the University of La Serena is fulfilling its mission of being able to deliver to the community something that goes beyond teaching, contributing to the recognition of our history, of historical figures, of what our city of La Serena is. Today we are in the presence of a photographic exhibition with works by our students and also the second edition of a text that precisely delivers recognition and rescues names of streets and characters from this area.”

expo photos2For his part, the Government Seremi, Ignacio Pinto, commented that “this activity makes me extremely proud, first as an academic at the School of Journalism and second as an authority starting a few days ago, so I find that it demonstrates very well the quality of our students, the vision they have regarding not only an artistic exhibition, but also a commitment to the region, a commitment to heritage, a commitment to preserving history, both the photographic exhibition and what the book provides. “It speaks of the connection that the University and the School of Journalism have with the region, and that is very important for us because it allows us to build the region from the bases, from higher education.”

This second edition of the book constitutes an enriched publication, because in addition to including the texts of the first edition, 15 new chronicles were added about characters of regional and national historical importance, whose names identify other streets in this city. The authors of these journalistic notes are students who took the subjects of Journalism Technique I and II, in 2017.

In this regard, academic Marcela Poblete emphasized that “journalism is not only here and now, it also constitutes a valuable source of information and knowledge that allows maintaining and preserving the historical future for future generations, as well as the social and cultural life of a country".

“Visual Rhetoric”

“Visual Rhetoric” is the title of the collective exhibition of photojournalism that presents a selection of 72 images made by the students of the School of Journalism of the University of La Serena during the 2017 academic year in the subjects of Photography I and II, by the academic and Director of the School of Journalism, Mg. Cristian Muñoz.

In this regard, the teacher highlighted that "what we see today, first of all, is the view of human interest regarding the issues that surround us, there is a narrative that we can appreciate the B side of our city, of our environment, as well human problems such as gender violence, so sadly related in one of the photographs (...), then that is when one takes the meaning of this work, this work that is sometimes not completely understood. Here there is a work of respect, which is developed in an otherness in front of another human being, here there is a development and an ethical perspective of journalism, but above all there is dedication, there is time and there is dedication."

expo photos3This exhibition inaugurates the Exhibition Cycle of the Directorate of Linkage with the Environment and Extension, which hosts regional and national artists throughout the year in the Exhibition Hall, located at Benavente 950, in La Serena.

Culture is not elitist, it is not alien, but rather it proposes. For DIVEULS this is a mandate that rests at the very root of the University. We appreciate your presence and at the same time we invite you to be part of our annual activities since that is the most important mission we have, to link our University with the community through academic and artistic-cultural work.”

osuls

The professional group will give its first concert celebrating a new anniversary of the University of La Serena, along with great figures of music.

As inhabitants of this long and narrow country, since memorable times, we have witnessed the arrival of different foreign colonies and likewise, the imprint that their cultures have left on our identity, integrally enriching, from our economy to our customs and idiosyncrasies, to the point that not relating to the foreign seems, in itself, an alienated experience.

Faced with this reality, increasingly palpable in our territory, the professional orchestra of the Coquimbo Region has developed an artistic and musical program inspired by this borderless contingency, offering its demanding public a 2018 season with a strong multicultural profile called 'The symphonies of cultures', with repertoires dedicated to the main resident colonies of our region, by important teachers and soloists from Chile and the world.

One of them is the praised Chilean director Paolo Bortolameolli, established as one of the most outstanding Latin American musical talents of recent times; and together with the Spanish cellist Elisa Rodríguez Sádaba, they will be in charge of opening the first concert of the season of the Universidad de La Serena Symphony Orchestra. A presentation full of emotion, which will commemorate the XXXVII anniversary of the house of higher education with a repertoire that includes 'The Sacred Plot' by Sergio Berchenko, 'Variations on a Rococo Theme', Op. 33 by the Russian composer Piotr I. Tchaikovsky and the 'Symphony No. 4 'Italian'', Op.90 by Félix Mendelssohn.

osuls2For the Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés Pizarro, “it is a true pride that a group as prestigious as the University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra is in charge of the concert that commemorates the thirty-seventh anniversary of our house of higher education. This presentation is also an example of the commitment that the professional cast of the Coquimbo Region has with music, culture and education, since it is part of the varied program of concerts and activities that it offers year after year, and that achieves a great impact on the community.”

For his part, the current assistant director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (LAPhil), Paolo Bortolameolli, commented that conducting this first concert is synonymous with happiness: “I am happy to reunite with the Universidad de La Serena Symphony Orchestra Last year we had a nice experience from the first rehearsal and with two excellent concerts. This year also coincides with the start of the 2018 season and the University's anniversary. Strong reasons to look forward to this reunion,” he indicated.

Bortolameolli maintained that the behavioral thread of this program allows it to give it an interesting thematic direction that unites Chile with other cultures through the heritage of foreign colonies: “I love the strong idea of this season; Coincidentally, in my program, Mendelssohn's 'Italian' symphony celebrates Italic cultural wealth from a German vision (that of its composer); coincidence that, as you can deduce from my first and last name, I have Italian ancestry. In fact, I have many relatives in La Serena, all descendants of those first Italians who arrived in Chile,” he said.

osuls3Along with the Universidad de La Serena Symphony Orchestra, there will be soloist Elisa Rodríguez Sádaba; Multifaceted artist awarded numerous times with acting awards. She has also served as principal cellist in various orchestras in South America and the United States, and on this occasion she will give life to the work 'Variations on a Rococo Theme' by Tchaikovsky. According to the director's words, “our cello soloist comes from Spain to give us her vision of the work of a Russian inspired by an artistic movement of French origin, such as Rococo; and then finish with a repertoire of Chilean origin,” he elaborated.

The opening concert of the 2018 season is free and will take place, as is traditional, at the Municipal Theater of La Serena, next Friday, March 23, at 20:00 p.m. Given this, maestro Bortolameolli extended a tempting invitation to the local community: “I hope that people become part of these concerts, and that, from the infinite richness in the mixture of perspective, the intersection of traditions and points of view, "They can listen and soak up each of the musical themes that the orchestra offers them."

This new season of the orchestra is developed thanks to the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, from whom it receives part of its financing through National Budget Glosa since 2016; in addition to the support provided by the University of La Serena and the Municipality of La Serena, through its Department of Culture.

u children

With this program, DIVEULS presents the opportunity to get to know the University of La Serena from the inside, in an entertaining vacation panorama.

A new version of the Children's University in summer has just culminated at the University of La Serena. The activity, organized by the Directorate of Liaison with the Environment and Extension and which opened the study house, its rooms and laboratories to receive students from the Coquimbo Region, who participated in five vocational and sports workshops.

u children 2The scheduled workshops were “Induction to Anatomy for Health Careers”, “Recreational Mathematics”, “Analysis of human posture through a movement laboratory, “Audiovisual workshop for boys and girls” and “Sports games”, which were transformed into an entertaining panorama for these vacations.

This was confirmed by Luciano Hermosilla, who has attended the Children's University workshops since 2011. “I found it fun (…), it helps to express, to meet friends, to make friends (…), I think it has to continue for the future, for all the children who want to enroll because it helps a lot to the imagination, to teamwork , to several things.”

Another relevant aspect of this program of activities is that the workshops are held in the facilities of the courses or physical spaces related to the area to be worked on, such as the Kinesiology laboratories or the gymnasium of the Andrés Bello Campus, and led by academics from the state campus. Regarding the Sports workshop, held for the first time as part of this program, official Dominique Brown highlighted: “we really liked the group, the ages, the children were very participatory, respectful, they arrived on time and participated in the activities. We really liked the activity, we hope to be able to do it next year or perhaps as soon as possible in winter.”

u children 3The activities were quite varied, since both sports and technologies were incorporated. For example, another of the novelties this year was the Audiovisual Workshop given by journalist Claudia Farías, who maintained that “it was a large, diverse group, but very creative, that we do not have to give them much instruction because they already come with audiovisual culture. They were born with this, they handle phones perfectly, they know about the camera, so I tried to incorporate some composition content, camera movements, image elements, which is basic so that they can create without copying, that they can create new things, because the kids are also very influenced, by what they see, by the series, the cartoons, so the idea is that they do more artisanal work here, and that allows them to be more creative and solve their problems with the resources that exist.”

The Children's University is held every year during the summer and/or winter holidays and seeks to open the University to schoolchildren in the region.

closing musical events

The long-awaited event included daytime and evening presentations in chamber music format, choral repertoire and other innovative stage proposals.

For five successful days, music took over the regional capital to offer residents and tourists free concerts in various formats and styles. The initiative framed in the thirty-third version of the Summer Musical Meetings had the participation of eight national groups, and was marked by two important milestones: the emotional farewell of maestro Hugo Domínguez Cruzat, who said goodbye to the stage after being uninterruptedly 30 years old under the baton of the Jorge Peña Hen Youth Symphony Orchestra; and finally, the colossal closing starring the University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra together with the ULS Symphony Choir and talented soloists, who thrilled the audience with the interpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

After the last concert directed by Maestro Domínguez, the Academic Vice-Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Jorge Catalán Ahumada, indicated that the “Musical Encounters are the exceptional framework for an also exceptional musical career, of a great academic of the University from La Serena such as Hugo Domínguez. He leaves a great legacy, and here there are many people who one day were a disciple of this great teacher," adding that this concert marked "a wonderful day for the region, for our house of studies and, why not say it, for the country." , being an act of high significance.”

closing musical meetings2The traditional local event also featured chamber music presentations held at the Centenario Theater, where attendees could enjoy the performance of Santiago Kurchnir and Ska Cuturrufo Pierotic, with 'TA! Another percussion', 'Manuel Macías and the Guitar Ensemble of the Music Department of the University of La Serena', and the regional group 'D' Entraña Cantera', who sought to link themselves with the Orphic heritage, through the ancient link between poetry, singing and spirituality.

For the duo of percussionists from Buenos Aires and La Serena respectively, “the experience of playing at these summer Musical Meetings was very good. We felt very well received with the proposal that we had proposed, where we tried to show a very broad spectrum of percussion; We also presented it in our home, the Centenario Theater, and that plus the warmth of the people made us feel super comfortable," adding that these initiatives are very important for cities and their inhabitants, since "it is necessary to federalize and democratize access to the culture, that it is good, of quality and different, and not belittle if people come from more remote places and think that they are not going to understand or they are not going to like it, it is the other way around. Rather, people come to these places because they are looking for new things,” said Santiago Kurchnir.

For his part, Gabriel Gálvez, composer and singer of the group 'D' Entraña Cantera', expressed feeling “happy about this presentation, apparently for people this was significant and that gives us a lot of joy in the sense that perhaps, in the In the best of cases, one can reflect the soul of people, and that is what one aspires to in the deepest part," adding that the objective of the group is "to take the musical experience back to a state prior to the separation of the music with poetry, that is the origin of music. What moves us is to go back to that priority, to that state of unification around a spiritual experience.”

Later, during the nights, the Municipal Theater of La Serena hosted thousands of people who vibrated with the different programs of this version, which included a repertoire inspired by classic German baroque masters such as GP Telemann, JS Bach and G. F. Händel, performed by the Baroque Orchestra 'La Extravagante'; the concert offered by the 'University Orchestra' of the University of La Serena with a program called 'Symphonic Dances of the World', which included pieces such as: 'Sensemayá' by Silvestre Revueltas, 'Danzón N° 2' by Arturo Márquez, 'Danzas Polovetsianas' from the opera "Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin and the well-known dances from the suite 'Estancia' by the Argentine Alberto Ginastera. In addition, the La Serena Chamber Choir presented its adaptations for female and male choirs, infused with 'Music and Poetry' of Chilean and Latin American format.

closing musical meetings3Beethovenian Closure

As a finishing touch to the thirty-third version of the summer Musical Meetings, the culmination of the event was in the hands of the ensemble belonging to the Network of Professional Regional Orchestras of the National Council of Culture and the Arts, who under the baton of the Chilean director guest, José Luis Domínguez Mondragón, and together with the dazzling voices of the ULS Symphonic Choir - prepared by the outstanding Chilean tenor and academic of the Music Department of the University of La Serena, Gonzalo Tomckowiack - and the guest soloists: Patricia Cifuentes (soprano) , Homero Pérez (baritone), Evelyn Ramírez and Gonzalo Tomckowiack himself, gave a colossal concert at the Cathedral of La Serena.

The presentation was marked by the figure of Ludwig van Beethoven and his magnanimous 'Ninth Symphony in D Minor, Op.125', an instance that also concluded the laborious 2017 Season of the regional ensemble, presenting the nine symphonies of the German composer and opening with success a challenging and inclusive 2018 Season, whose focus goes hand in hand with the words of human approach, brotherhood and peace that such a majestic work expresses.

For the national director residing in the United States, this concert “was very exciting, because it had been a long time since I had come to La Serena, my hometown, and when the orchestra invited me, I was able to quickly fix my schedule and come and not miss this great concert for any reason", adding that "I have the memory of the Musical Meetings as a very special moment, where several concerts were held and shared with orchestras from Santiago and foreign musicians, after a while they stopped doing them, and the fact that they have taken up this tradition seems really important to me. Furthermore, the Universidad de La Serena Symphony Orchestra is playing very well and they have a very nice project, with a tremendous future, and I am delighted to have been part of this; above all, for this great work by Beethoven, which was accompanied by a choral symphony and presented in the Cathedral of La Serena, a place with spectacular acoustics, this was simply the pinnacle of the symphonic repertoire,” Domínguez said excitedly.

closing musical meetings4The need for a Regional Theater

The success and the incredible audience reached in each of the presentations, opened the debate of having an adequate venue that can house not only music, but all the artistic expressions present in the territory. An initiative that has been gaining strength over time and has become more necessary with the massive consumption of cultural activities.

For Isabel Correa, attendee of the chamber concerts at the Teatro Centenario, holding these types of events, free of charge and quality, “allows us to promote these spaces and, in the process, help increase the audience that enjoys this type of event.” initiatives. With this, we can validate the urgent construction of a Regional Theater. Some authorities do not see it as a priority, but it is super important to be able to form audiences and generate ideal spaces to consume culture.”

Regarding this same issue, Humberto González, a resident of the region, added that “we must always take into consideration that the decisions made by the authorities have to do with many guidelines and it seems to me that they are forgetting one, which is the culture theme. It cannot be that a city like La Serena, which for so many years has been the cradle of great musicians, especially symphonic musicians, lacks a venue in keeping with its history, its importance and the regional culture. It seems to me that we are in the right position as a city regarding that,” he expressed.

It should be noted that the summer Musical Encounters was a free intervention available to the public, organized by the Department of Music of the University of La Serena and the La Serena Regional Symphony Orchestra Foundation; and sponsored by the Rectorate of the ULS and the National Council of Culture and the Arts (CNCA), through the Cultural Donations Law.

After performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the La Serena University Symphony Orchestra inaugurated its interesting 2018 Season. A programming without borders that seeks to rescue multiculturalism through the music of great teachers and performers.
