Students from the different educational establishments assigned to the Support and Effective Access to Higher Education Program, PACE ULS, are part of the initiative.

The Accompaniment Program (PACE) of the University of La Serena, within the framework of the area of ​​Secondary Education Preparation (PEM), implemented the so-called “PACE ULS Academy”, in its line of work to generate actions to reinforce transversal skills in the Academic Area and the Vocational Guidance Area of ​​the educational establishments assigned to the Program.

The general objective of the PACE ULS Academy is to prepare young people in 3rd grade for the first years of Higher Education, seeking to enhance the development of their transversal skills, with emphasis on those related to their areas of interest and also allowing them a early approach to university life.

success academy pace2The PEM PACE ULS academic manager, Jovanna González, explained the operation of this instance: “the work of the Academy is being carried out through reinforcement cycles, which seek to provide support to students interested in continuing Higher Education studies at universities. o Technical Training Center, prioritizing areas of reinforcement that can bring them closer to a potential career, once they graduate from high school.”

In this same context, the PACE ULS Secondary Education Preparation Coordinator, Loreto Garrido, indicated that “the two years of admission to Higher Education, an early leveling program has been carried out in the Higher Education Support Area, AES PACE ULS. , and in the diagnosis it is evident that the students know in a very general way the careers to which they have applied, in addition that they are unaware of the competencies associated with the graduation profile and the labor field of the areas they have chosen. Therefore, the Academy helps to reinforce these lines and also motivate students to continue studying.”

Regarding the operation of the PACE ULS Academy, it is operational in the three provinces of the Coquimbo Region, in order to be able to work more expeditiously with the students of the educational establishments assigned to the Program: in the Province of Elqui , at the University of La Serena for the Gabriela Mistral High School, Marta Brunet High School, Pedro Aguirre Cerda School in La Serena, Pedro Pablo Muñoz School in La Higuera and Pedro Regalado Videla High School in Andacollo.

In the Province of Limarí, on the Lamarí ULS Campus, for the Estela Ávila Molina High School in Perry, the Raúl Silva Henríquez School, the El Ingenio School of Administration and Commerce in Ovalle, and the Alberto Gallardo Lorca High School in Punitaqui. And in Choapa, at the CEDUC UCN headquarters in Los Vilos, for the Liceo Municipal Polivalente Salamanca and Liceo Federico Lohse de Los Vilos. There are 180 students benefiting from the initiative.

The Teaching Directorate, together with the Institutional Studies Office belonging to the Institutional Studies and Planning Directorate, successfully developed the Workshop for School Directors and Career Coordinators called: “Use of Indicators and Reports for Curriculum Management.”

The meeting held at the Technology Center of the Faculty of Engineering (CETECFI), had the objective of internalizing them in the use of the institutional platform of indicators and all the information products that the Studies Office makes available to the academic and administrative units. , to promote curriculum management.

The Office of Institutional Studies, on the occasion, officially launched its website, which contains open and updated information available to the entire university community.

This time, the day included the faculties of Humanities, Social and Economic Sciences, Engineering and Sciences, whose representatives received a copy of the pocket book "ULS Figures", and an induction to the web application DataULS App. In addition, some practical exercises were carried out, which included an evaluation at the end of the day, to become familiar with the institutional indicator dashboards, available on the Phoenix platform.

For two years we have been working together with “La Brújula” Cowork, where students in their final year of law school guide entrepreneurs and advise in different areas.

In the Auditorium of the Law program, belonging to the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of the University of La Serena, the closing keynote talk of the Legal Clinic subject was held, called: “Basic obligations of a taxpayer” , by the teacher and Director of the Department of Economics and Business Sciences, Mg. Alberto Hernandez.

In the talk, organized by the Law major, the teacher gave a complete presentation of the different aspects that an entrepreneur must take into account when forming a company, as well as maintaining up-to-date obligations for the proper development of the organization. .

The Director of the Law degree, Mg., also participated. Germán Solís, and the teacher, Mg. Elizabeth Escobar, in charge of the Legal Clinic chair, who throughout the academic year has accompanied the students in this work of linking with the environment.

It should be noted that through this type of advice, the students maintained direct contact with those who required real help, and thus put into practice everything they learned during their years of study.

The management with “La Brújula” Cowork was carried out through the Management of the degree, achieving an associative work agreement, maintaining rules and establishing deadlines that both parties have respected, thus allowing a good development of the interventions that the students have carried out. with your real clients.

For the Director of the degree, this type of work is of special relevance, since it allows his students to connect with the world of real work, in addition to having a clear visualization of what is done in the work field. Likewise, he highlighted the relationship they have with “La Brújula”, classifying it as “an agreement that has borne excellent results, where they are very satisfied with the work of our students and with the Clinical professor. Cowork has provided us with these entrepreneurs, so that our students can put their knowledge into practice.”

The subject of Legal Clinic is within the study program of the Law degree, and for the year 2019 it will continue to be developed with advice to the entrepreneurs of La Brújula” Cowork, also strengthening the connection with the environment and the purpose of establishing networks support and contact with the community.

The initiative has allowed ULS students to develop their reports, theses and practices in strategic areas of knowledge.

The original idea, which gave life to the Multidisciplinary Research Group in Energy and Environmental Management, GIMEGA, bore its first fruits. The student Sofía Saldívar, with a degree in Laboratory Chemist, became the first student to qualify for 100% Ineergias, an initiative that aimed to bring together various forms of work to condense knowledge and develop studies for the students and the University of La Serena. .

ineergia2 academyThe commitment of the professionals in charge of this group has been to carry out studies in multidisciplinary areas, where chemistry and physics are mixed, associated with energy efficiency and sustainability, and where students were able to develop their knowledge in reports, theses and practices.

In this context and after several months of continuous and systematic work, Sofía Zaldívar carried out different actions aimed at studying how the properties of zinc sulfide (ZnS) change by modifying certain parameters in the process of obtaining the material. What she achieved with this study was the optimization of the process of obtaining and standardizing the parameters. Thus, it was shown that the material under certain manufacturing conditions is an excellent candidate to be used in solar cells (devices that transform sunlight into electric current).

“This accounts for the creation of a school, a group where researchers and more than 30 students come to participate and work on topics related to the work of Ineergias. Although they are indicators of the performance agreement, the most relevant thing is that today they give life to an area of ​​development. There are students who are doing their professional practices, their degree reports and that allows us to predict that at least from this group, there will be several scientists who are going to contribute in this or another part of the country in these areas of development," he indicated.

The Multidisciplinary Research Group in Energy and Environmental Management, GIMEGA, belongs to the Multidisciplinary Research Institute in Science and Technology of the University of La Serena and Ineergias (PMI 1401), and develops research activities focused, mainly, on studying materials that can capture solar radiation for two reasons: (i) to generate electricity and (ii) decontaminate water.

The exhibition on parasites of human beings and their pets linked students, teachers and researchers with the school and general community of the Coquimbo Region.

A large number of people participated for three days in the “Educational Exhibition in Sciences: Parasites of human beings and their pets”, an activity organized and carried out jointly by the Pedagogy in Biology and Natural Sciences, Nursing and Journalism careers of the University of La Serena. On the occasion, around 30 students, professors and researchers collaborated, who attended the public in the tent set up for the exhibition and were in charge of the different talks that were held around the same topic.
