The workshop “Stimulation of memory level I” ended with an entertaining dramatization
The results obtained in the sessions impressed even the students themselves, who completed this process with emotional words.
The first level of the “Memory Stimulation” workshop lasted eight sessions, taught by the academic from the Department of Nursing of the University of La Serena, Mg. Carmen Retamal, and her assistant Diego Valenzuela. In the classes the students learned how to exercise their memory and performed exercises that excited and captivated them. One of the most striking classes was “Reminiscence”, where the group of 23 people nostalgically sang some compositions that surely marked important moments in their personal history.
How to exercise memory, concentration, language, creativity, intelligence, reminiscence, were some of the topics addressed in this workshop, considered by the academic as special within her work with older adults.
In this version, the main objective was to work on myths rooted in society that associate the aging process with memory problems; For this reason, this workshop provided effective tools to produce effective cognitive stimulation in older people, thus seeking quality and active aging.
In the opinion of the students, this event allowed them to live very pleasant moments and provided them with positive aspects for this moment in their lives. “It is very pleasant to have attended this workshop, which has been very beneficial. It has guided us in some actions and I find it fundamental, we need it, older adults really need these activities to be carried out because they allow us to look differently at what we were experiencing,” emphasized student Ana Barrios.
Even more positive was Héctor Flores, who thanked all his teammates for the initiative. “The workshop was excellent in every way, what they teach you is beautiful, you value yourself more as a person, you feel much better (...), you have more hope of taking life with a little more flavor, I don't know feel so alone I feel very good and very grateful for all the people here,” he commented.
This activity is part of the School for the Elderly, organized by the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena, a program that includes conferences, workshops and cultural embassies throughout the year.
