The proposal addresses issues of identity and masculinity from the emotional and historical perspective of its authors.

The permanent research and analysis of the plastic artists and academics of the School of Art of the Pontificia Universidad Católica, Iván Zambrano and Danilo Espinoza, give life to the interesting exhibition that, starting this week, is presented to the community in the Exhibition Hall of the University of La Serena.

Iconic and everyday elements are mixed with others of a functional nature in the work of Iván Zambrano, Master in Art from the Pontifical Catholic University. ''I use the plumb line, an element of construction, a basic technology that allows, through its weight, to generate straight vertical lines, which in this case symbolizes the patriarchal and authoritarian masculinity very latent in the last century, along with different objects that "They symbolize both masculinity, the female figure and childhood," said the artist.

divergent 2For his part, the speaker Danilo Espinoza, Diploma in Advanced Studies (DEA/Master), Faculty of Fine Arts of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) and specialist in Plastic Arts at the UPV Postgraduate Training Center, on this occasion presents ' 'Luis' Album', a series of works inspired by the story of Luis Jiménez, cartoonist, poet and member of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) who was arrested and disappeared in 1973 when he was 25 years old.

''In general, when the subject is discussed, the figures of their faces always come to mind, or of the posters that relatives have carried for years, but we never know what they were like in daily life. For this reason I present this project, with the idea of giving back something of his identity or autobiography, based on these images,'' he specified.

The first exhibition of the 2014 season was inaugurated within the framework of the XXXIII anniversary of the University of La Serena and was attended by institutional authorities, artists and guests who appreciated each of the works with interest.

The Director of Extension of the ULS, Dr. Catalina Cvitanic, expressed her satisfaction at starting a new cycle of exhibitions, with the complete program for 2014, in an example of the diversity and interest of national and local artists in presenting their proposals. .

This exhibition will remain open to the public in the ULS Exhibition Hall (Benavente 950) from March 19 to April 17, 2014, Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. and from 15:30 p.m. to 18:00 p.m., and from Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. and from 15:30 p.m. to 19:00 p.m.

The only prerequisite is knowing computing at the user level, that is, turning on the computer and executing basic actions.

The speakers will be Eva Toro and Karina Núñez, both professionals from the Educational Computing Center, who have previously worked with older adults, which has been quite pleasant for them. ''It is a very rewarding experience since the older adults give you a lot of love and are very grateful for the treatment, the patience and the entire teaching process that we have with them,'' commented Karina Núñez.

Participants will have a support manual for each session, which will include basic and key tips so they can carry out the task. In addition, the teacher guaranteed a personalized course, respecting the learning times of each student and extended a cordial invitation. The work is part of a composition by a graduate of the University of La Serena, who will also offer world premiere musical pieces.

With the presentation ''Fantasías para Piano'' by the young musician Nicolás Véliz del Pino, the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena will begin its 2014 Concert Series.

The public who attends this show will be able to listen to compositions of his authorship, as well as a string ensemble, as guest artists. From the living room.

This is the second time that the student who graduated from the ULS Music Department performs a concert at the Extension Center. The musician acknowledges that the experience last January "was very pleasant and I liked the reception from the public, that is why I have chosen to play again at the Extension Center, especially for its intimate and close acoustics." He also revealed that his source of inspiration for composing his musical pieces comes mainly from ''the sensations that are evoked by colors and different degrees of light'', from which several titles have been born, among which 'Fluentem' stands out. Colores'' (for strings) and ''Precious Stones'' (cycle of pieces for solo piano). From the latter, Véliz will play two pieces in the next concert.

The young artist, who began composing at the age of 9 with a children's keyboard, has high expectations for the next version of this concert, with which he seeks to consolidate himself through several public presentations. Likewise, he wants to contribute with social work and a great contribution to local culture, since his objective is "to bring piano music closer to all people."

''Many times this type of music seems to be within a few circles, but that is something that can be changed,'' added Nicolás, who is currently dedicated to teaching piano at the Casa Chopin academy in La Serena. The artist extended the invitation to all people who want to attend the event, to take advantage of this opportunity, especially because the repertoire for that night will include the premiere of a recent unpublished composition under the title ''Fantasía Nival''.

astroday 1

The science fair, conferences, mobile planetarium and exhibition brought together more than 2.300 people.

The eighth version of AstroDay Chile 2014 was presented with various activities for the whole family. The activity, which became a family outing, gave the community the opportunity to interact directly with astronomers, receive material, obtain a large amount of information from astronomy and even observe through professional telescopes located in the city's main square. The Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, the director of the Gemini Observatory, Nancy Levenson, the mayor of La Serena, Roberto Jacob, and the director of Extension, Dr. Catalina Cvitanic, participated in the inauguration.

From 17:00 p.m. This Saturday the AstroDay Chile science fair was held, organized by the Gemini Observatory, in conjunction with the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena and the Illustrious Municipality of La Serena. The 21 stands of scientific and tourist observatories in the Coquimbo Region and Chilean universities that offer physics and astronomy courses, provided a varied range of information about astronomy and outer space. Simultaneously, 5 talks were held at the ULS Extension Center, in addition to the mobile planetarium.

''It seems to me to be a tremendously important activity that benefits the entire regional community. We see that there are many young people, children, adults and they all show a great interest in what astronomy is (...). Happy that we as a University can contribute with our connection with the environment, which is part of our task as an educational institution,'' expressed the Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés.

For the organizers, the response from attendees was quite positive and far exceeded expectations. ''The truth is that it has been unthinkable, because although it is true that we knew that we were going to be open to the community, we never imagined that people would arrive before the doors opened. In fact, in the morning when we were setting up there were already people asking what time we were going to open and we are talking about more than 200 people who only in the morning stopped by to pick up material, so we are very happy and we also see that this is a family outing. "People of all ages come, they leave happy with the material and also with educational resources," said María Antonieta García, Gemini communications manager.

astroday 2Conferences

As part of these activities, a series of conferences were also held at the Extension Center of the U. de la Serena, which presented interesting topics in an attractive and understandable way for all ages. In fact, this was precisely one of the most attractive characteristics for one of the speakers. ''The day has been super nice, I had to give a talk about the constellations and people participated a lot. There was a wide age range and I really liked that, it wasn't just focused on children (…) so it was a great experience,'' commented Abdo Campillay, astronomer at the Las Campanas Observatory, who gave the conference ''Constellations''.

Clearly, all the topics were very interesting, since the places for each of them ran out very early. Among the conferences were also ''The Yellow Universe: Springfield, the Simpsons and their Undercover Astronomy'', ''Astronomy in Star Wars'' and ''Scientific errors in science fiction films''.

astroday 3Professor ''Crazy Nut''

One of the biggest attractions of the day was Professor Crazy Nut, who, through interesting experiments, brought science in a fun and entertaining way. The professor, who began his activities in the schools of La Serena and also gave one of the talks, expressed his gratitude for the invitation and for the opportunity to teach entertaining science. ''One feels proud and happy to be able to participate in these activities, by being invited one can share with them and in the end we all enjoy the activity, we all see ourselves benefiting, both them for what they learn and us for the joy of being able to teach them,'' he said.

Finally, the authorities thanked the institutions present, including: GAULS, Astronomy Group of the Department of Physics of the University of La Serena, ALMA, NASA Van Allen Probes Project, AURA with its Gemini, Cerro Tololo, SOAR and LSST observatories. , Las Campanas, OPCC, Mamalluca, Cruz del Sur, Cerro Mayu, Pangue, Cancana, Collowara, Valle del Sol Carén, ROAN-JASE Tourist, Astronomical and Educational Observatory, Dept. divergent expo poster

The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, March 18 at 18:00 p.m.

Within the framework of the 33rd anniversary of the University of La Serena, the Extension Directorate will inaugurate its Exhibition cycle with the exhibition ''Divergent'', by the authors Danilo Espinoza Guerra and Iván Zambrano Downing, both academics at the School of Art from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, who will present a selection of drawings, engravings, sculptures and photographs.

According to Danilo Espinoza, the work will fundamentally show two projects: one addresses the problem of Mapuche women living in the city and the other is directly associated with the issue of missing detainees and the role of women in society. ''What I do is impregnate papers with soot using a matrix that allows generating images, the work I develop is similar to that of the stencil, the basis of the technique is in engraving. The technique developed is humorography,'' Espinoza said.

The works have been organized according to the various themes and techniques developed by Espinoza and Zambrano in recent years, where they also include a series of photographs that investigate the erotic and the feminine, taking as reference the fantasies of the male world.

''Divergent has to do with understanding that they are proposals that are born from a common reflection and end up being absolutely different material work and there they distance themselves and diverge, that is why we think of that name, they are connected in the origin, in the problems, in the ideas that were discussed to propose the work, but materially they are proposals that are absolutely different from each other,'' commented Espinoza.

This exhibition will be open to the public in the ULS Exhibition Hall (Benavente 950) from March 19 to April 17, 2014, on Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. and from 15:30 p.m. to 18:00 p.m., and from Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. and from 15:30 p.m. to 19:00 p.m. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, March 18 at 18:00 p.m.
